"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Where is separation of church and state?
In fact if we look at the 9th one we read this: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."
It is not only against the constitution to enforce some type of religion but it is also against the constitution to restrict it as well, and that is all that is being said. The statement seperation of church and state came from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson. He actually wanted the constitution to contain that phrase but it doesn't and for good reason.

The problem comes when what one group considers to be the free exercising of their religion impinges on others' ability to exercise theirs, or their right not to exercise religion.

That's when we end up with the God smackdown, with the courts arbitrating.

With religion at the core, it just means that each group knows they're right, and shouldn't compromise at all.

The founding fathers lived in a more (but not entirely) homogeneous society. Transportation and communication at the time helped make it so. We can't return to that world -- the genie is out of the bottle. So we are, in fact, stuck with the interpretation of where my religion ends and yours begins.

BTW

My wish did not come through last night. "NONE OF THE ABOVE" failed to win. But I think Obama will do okay on the international scene (at least in the short term), but there is no way in hell he will be able to fulfill a fraction of all the domestic election promises he made. Not all of it will be his fault (the US economy is deep in the shitters). But oh my he sure made a lot of utopian promises.

BTW, for clarity, the "paint it black" comment is something that I heard in complete seriousness here in Florida from someone who should know better.:(

Personally, I consider prayer, baptism, marriage, creationism, and many other things to be establishments of religion about which Congress should make no law.

"There will be no designated establishment of religion" does not imply the same thing as "shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion".
