Obamas speech

Recommended Posts

I just finished watching Obamas' speech from Grant Park.
It was like watching a revival meeting, but i did note that throughout his entire speech be refrained from ever using the the word "Black", he seemed to go to great lengths to distance his colour from the campaign and the result.
Good speech though, and he gave Kudos to McCain (with a passing comment on Palin).

This line said it best for me....
"What began twenty-one months ago in the depths of winter must not end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek -- it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you.
"

He reached across the barriers of red/blue and hopefully caught the ears of rational Americans that voted for McCain.
His deliverance was humble, powerful, and obviously heartfelt. Rehearsed, but delivered with confidence and surety.
Looking forward to the next four years with a liberal Senate, House, and President. We might get a little bit of a fix from the last 8 years soon.

I thought both the concession speech by McCain and the thank you speech by Obama were very gracious. I don't care who you are, if you weren't moved by both speeches, you have no heart. I was especially disappointed by some members of both audiences that couldn't see past the moment and actually booed the name of the person not on stage. What asshats.

The thing that struck me about the Obama speech was how much it looked like something Aaron Sorkin would have made for The West Wing including a score that could have come directly from Snuffy Walden.

This night was like watching Neil Armstrong walking on the moon; an amazing moment in US history. Savor it.

He didn't use the term 'black' because he is a TRUE African American (Dad from Kenya, Mom a bi-racial American).

The terms "Black" "Negro" "Colored' were put in place because we were separated from our origins at large, and our newly structured families (SOLD!) , we barely had time for last names, much less an ethnicity.

But he is an American. Trust in that. Just as you may be a(n)_____American. Be proud to be that

I believe that it's right and proper that he does not mention colour. The presedential race is above all a party political race and all those that tried to turn it into a racial/religious hate thing should hang their heads in shame.

Americans have voted (and in good numbers) that they think that time is right for a change in the political landscape of their country but let's face it, it's not going to be a massive change. They have a new leader (elect) but the power comes from elsewhere in the main but the Leader has his hands on the tiller, to help guide and shape that landscape.

My wife and I both wept a bit by the end of Obama's speech.

It's very inspiring to know someone like him will be in that office - someone who will actually fucking pronounce words correctly, who can actually absorb information and complex concepts. Someone who didn't have a legacy to follow, whose DAD wasn't there to prepare a future spot for him - he actually earned it through humility, intelligence, and perseverance.

Whenever I've seen someone "meet the President" in the past, I've always thought it was just a wing-flap - but I'd be very honored to meet Barack Obama.

Concur. Both speeches were well-crafted, well-delivered, gracious, and im-ever-ho, honestly spoken and truly intentioned. Both candidates made me proud to be an American last night.

this is where i get confused...how can we not honor the occasion for what it is? we did, in fact, elect an african american man into office. why shouldn't we celebrate that?! its momentous. turning it into a negative/hate thing i can understand - but i see absolutely nothing wrong with a little reveling in the fact that, in 40 years, we went from the civil rights movement to the election of obama. what's wrong with acknowledging it?[:/]

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong per se. To me it would just be a non-issue, superficial even. I'd be more interested in his politics and road map for putting the country back togerther.

Now if he was a gay, black, hispanic woman.....:P

I wasn't moved at all. I was sick to my stomach at the embracement of Carl Marx over Adam Smith by many of my own countrymen.

Just like listening to a revival......this is the problem. He is a good speaker....but is that why someone should be president? I thought they should be elected due to their stance on the issue? So we, a free and capitalist country, elect a socialist....a man who's policies are similar to those of a previous president who lengthened the depression 7 years http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/FDR-s-Policies-Prolonged-Depression-5409.aspx?RelNum=5409 .... a man who doesn't get payed enough to tell us when he thinks life begins.... a man who thinks the goverment should raise your kids til they are 5.... a man who doesn't know how many states there are www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpGH02DtIws.... a man who doesn't even know what religion he followswww.youtube.com/watch?v=XKGdkqfBICw .....
Barack the builder? No one can name a single accomplishment of his...www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzFOOcEQtP0 www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkZ1DQeOSVQ
Please, lets look at the facts and not the pretty words.

He is more than simply a good speaker. Perhaps the most important quality in a President is leadership, and make no mistake about this...leadership is an individual skill, not something inherent to a title. Obama is a leader. He compels people to want to follow him. By contrast, Bush has been more of a dictator, claiming to be "the decider" and running roughshod over the Constitution and our nation's good reputation. I, for one, am excited about having a leader who actually leads. He may take us down a few wrong paths, as would anyone in that position, but overall I think he'll take us in the right direction.

Nah. The bar was lowered to "dude you want at a kegger" a couple of election cycles back. We're raising the bar these days. It's refreshing.

What good is a leader if he leads you in the wrong direction? How can someone qualify as a good leader when they have not accomplished anything in the area they are supposed to be leading in? (Also, how can someone be a "dictator" in our government system?)
Hitler was a great leader in the aspect that people followed him.... but where did he lead them?
We should be looking at where these people plan to lead us first, then whether they are actually capable of leading us there or not. Once again, how can we consider someone capable of leading us somewhere when they have never accomplished anything in the area we want them to lead us?
There are those who talk and sound good when they do, and people will follow whatever they say.... that does not mean they are being lead in the right direct or even that they will ever reach their goal. I like result, not talk, and that is what the president is supposed to bring us. I also like for those result to be what is right for the country and this is also what the president is supposed to bring us.
In on of the debates there was a virtual admission that higher taxes would hurt the economy and therefore the country. This was in the statement that they would wait for the economy to recover before raising taxes. Obviously they have to wait for the economy to recover because they know raising taxes hurts the economy. If taxes helped they wouldn't wait.
Once again, the president is supposed to bring results and is supposed to do what is best for the country yet we see here in this one example how if there are result they will not be what is best for the country. Its that simple.
