I will NOT apologize for the stupidity of my ancestors but your inference that simply being southern and being conservative makes you racist is asinine.

Georgia has only been a "Red" State in 6 of the last 10 presidential elections (Same as California BTW).. Prior to that they were 100% democrat for 100 consecutive years.

Tell's you something about many staunch southern rePUBICans there doesn't it.

And saying the actions of Stupid people in 1964 says anything about people in the south that were not even born then is simply not accurate.

Myself and millions of other just like me didnt vote for Obama because of his policies NOT because of his race.

Assault weapons aren't an issue so much as the perspective taken on them. Most of the gun crimes I see in my state are revolvers and semi-auto handguns.
Gay rights confuse me - why they have to force an issue to get them the rights they should already have is the problem that needs to be fixed. I could care less what you prefer to do in your own home and bedroom. I don't expect any rights because of my behavior there.
I do not want national health care, I've seen what our government does when it takes control of things!

I think we agree on 2 of 3 things here. I don't think anyone needs to own an M-16, but I think everyone (if you are not insane or a violent felon) should be able to own a handgun or 30-30.

I don't care what people do in their own bedrooms (assuming it is not a 60 year old with a 12 year old) and I don't see a reason that one gay man can not inherit something or visit his sick partner in the ICU.

On healthcare, I've had benefits (not great but still benefits) but have not been to a doctor in about 6 years because I'm affraid of what the insurance company will decide it should and should not pay. I think if we all had the same benefits as a senator, it would be a good thing. I also think that if I can get the same drug from Canada as the US at half the price, I should be able to do that.

When is the last time your saw a christian white male that was "allowed" to celebrate because of it, yet we have Women's World Records in skydiving and First Black President, First Female VP Dem or Rep. It is not the majority forcing people to see the difference, it is these groups. Just get over it and consider everyone equal. The more differences are drawn attention to, the longer the lines will be clear.

that's a pretty standard response, but i don't see how that comparison can even be made. white, christian men have NEVER had to fight for, or been denied their rights. ever. they've been given preference and priveledge since this country's beginnings. of course a group who was once oppressed is going to want to celebrate its achievements when it attains something it was once denied.

i have friends whose parents were not able to safely walk the streets not too long ago, while mine could do so with ease. i can't imagine what it would be like to know that only a few decades ago my entire RACE was considered to be inequally human - in the country i was born in, no less, or to endure what african americans STILL endure today: which your post illustrates quite nicely. first oppression, then as that is overcome, we diminish the value of the achievements they make despite that oppression? for the majority of the USA's existence, americans made sure black people knew those racial lines you speak of, and knew them well. but now because all of a sudden you say so, they should forget them? just stop seeing them?

what's wrong with having pride? i'll say it again. in 40 years we've gone from segregation and the civil rights movement, to the first african american president. that deserves recognition by EVERYONE. i am SO grateful that i got to see it happen. i don't know of a definition of "recognition" that includes preference. we're not showing preference, or sharpening racial lines by recognizing a black man's triumph, we're just embracing those lines. a line drawn through the middle of a circle is still a line - but 2 EQUAL halves are created. why all the fuss about erasing the racial line? to me, true equality is simply the awareness and acceptance, albeit acquiescent in most cases, of our differences.

:sigh: this topic always gets me all riled up. lol.

The problem is that, while power isn't a zero-sum game, neither is it an everyone-can-win game.

At any given time, there is a finite number of powerful positions in any structure. If one group is mostly (even if not entirely) excluded from those positions of power for a long time, the group that wasn't excluded is going to see a sudden inclusion as a loss of what they had. Because, well, it is. Now the group they have to compete against is much larger.

To go along with that, the criteria (which are often based on mores and customs of the formerly-dominant group) change too.

So, yeah. White males in the US had a lot of power that they never even thought they had, because that was normal. Not that they did a bad job, just that one generally had to be better if not a white male. Because the world, country, state, or company might not be "ready" for a female/black/hispanic/handicapped whatever.

Ummm, personally I feel extremely segregated at ladies' night in the bars, clubs, and the nor cal tunnel... to the point i cry myself to sleep at night. What about fighting for an independent nation to be proud of? ya know, all the rights we have given ourselves and defended for a couple centuries now so that a black man can be president? That was kind of a big win that we fought for...

Since I am an athiest and white and not a white christian male, does that make me a minority and can i have white pride now?

Nothing wrong with pride, but i do get the same frustrated feelings when it is OK to have black power and black pride, and sadly the idea white pride and white focus groups has been completely tainted by the lovely KKK and like groups. That said, I'm not proud to be white i mean i just happened to be born that way, nothing to take pride in. I'm proud of the sh*t i've done in and with my life, the sh*t i've worked for- why can't it be that simple for all races? No one ever worked or earned the color of their skin, racial pride enhances the divide IMO. yes, the slave thing is kind of a big blemish on our history, but it has clearly been rectified with what happened last night. I do think obama is handling the racial thing very well by downplaying it as much as he can, i appreciate that aspect of his campaign and victory... yes i can.

Me too :)

I didn't vote for obama because i don't like the way he gives a thumbs up... and the fact he has no f*cking clue or experience on what makes the world go 'round.
So there I was...

can someone explain to me why Jesse Jackson is crying?
:S

I don't know if Jesse Jackson was crying because he was happy or jealous.

I started tearing up a little bit out of joy.

I would hope that Jackson might have had a revelation last night. A revelation that his bullying and divisive tactics -aren't- the way to invoke change, but what worked was bringing everyone together. Point and center lesson to him last night.
