Notice most of the old slave states are still red.

You know reconciliation is a two way street Jeannie. Gloating on election night is just as bad as being a sore loser.
Look at whom you're addressing though. :D

I ...unlike many who have been taunting us for the last 7 years.... realize that for the most part it is Purple States of America that makes a difference.

But tonight gloating to some of the worst offenders.. just makes it that much sweeter.B|B|:)

You are living in a polarized nation with a VERY VERY close popular vote, how you deal with that as a nation is what a lot of outsiders will be looking at closely
You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky)

How's yours doing?

Indeed. The tax burden is shouldered rather heavily by them.

You'll also find that many of the Union Army Indian slayers came from Blue states, as well as the Blue states being where almost all British Loyalists lived during the Revolutionary War.

Shall we continue with other matters from 150 years ago or more?

The two "parties" both favor a strong federal government and aren't too far apart as the natural effects of a first-past-the-post electoral system dictate.

They do market themselves differently, but it all comes down to how they vote when they can win where they're pretty much the same (the Republican majority did not repeal gun laws or pass significant anti-abortion legislation).

There isn't any real polarization.

At least not in the way things are marketed. Democrats are for the little guy, yet Clinton kicked people off welfare. Republicans are for the wealthy yet tax collections became more progressive under Bush 43.

The whole Red vs. Blue thing is a distraction from the real issues aimed at people who think "Fooball! Good! Red team! No Blue team! Tastes great! Less Filling! ".

Imagine an $80,000 standard deduction for married couples, 1% tax rate above that, and 7% marginal rate for the ultra-rich making $10M a year. That's where the income tax started (2007 dollars) with a real minimal government.

Huh? The blue state are where the money is at. The red states are where the spending is at.

DC - $6.17 per $1 in federal taxes paid
ND - $2.03
NM - $1.89
MS - $1.84
AK - $1.82
....

If we in the blue states seceeded, those red state loosers (in the War of Northern Agression) would have to get second jobs to pay the bills.

Or maybe you're being sarcastic?

It's so hard to tell on the internet.

I noticed Okra (Oprah to the sensitive ones) was also bawling....like Ebekeneezer Baptist Church was.
IS this a race issue?

i'm being serious when i say that i don't understand the tone of your post. its perfectly obvious to me why they would be crying - this is a momentous occasion for african american people, whether you happen to like those 2 individuals or not. for all of us, in fact. i am SO incredibly proud that i get to be alive to see a black person elected president of this country, so i can't even begin to imagine what they're feeling tonight!

why that's being mocked, i won't pretend to understand. i can appreciate obama not mentioning it in his speech - and for this very reason, but c'mon! this is a historic event and i think its complete crap that celebration by the black community is being criticized. ugh.
Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!

His colour should have zero impact but I'm not naive enough to believe that but if that is the basis upon whioh people voted then his term will be built upon very weak foundations indeed.

Well, I'm glad that the lizzard man and the bimbo didn't win but I reserve judgement on how well Obama will do. I'm hoping very well.

The international community is watching with interest :)

I hope that we don't disappoint.
We also need old allies and new ones.

And I do largely agree with Jeanne that most of America is purple.

Largely concur.

And I cried in celebration last night and I'm a white girl ... all y'all can ascribe that to a girl-thing or whatever. From my perspective it's more a cognizance of history.

While foreign policy, economics, civil liberties, and choice of advisors were the drivers for my choice, I can appreciate the significance even if it was *not* a driver for me.

can someone explain to me why Jesse Jackson is crying?
:S

I don't know if Jesse Jackson was crying because he was happy or jealous.

I started tearing up a little bit out of joy.

What can the international community learn from us?

That one should elect a leader who is a bit brighter than Joe Six Pack. But, most in the international community have known that for 8 years now.

Why will our new president matter to them?

Cause with some better fiscal management the rest of the world won't have to lend you trillions of dollars.

Bingo.

A lot of the coverage last night made it a race issue.
I was of the belief that wasn't the case...until last night.:S
I still don't think it should be about "a black person" being elected so much as "this black person" being elected.
