SpeedRacer 1 #1 October 30, 2008 There's a referendum question in the next election in Maryland, asking whether we should have State -run electronic slot machines, whose proceeds would go to pay for schools etc. I say why not? It's like a tax on people who are bad at math. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
pirana 0 #2 October 30, 2008 Is it mandated that they be electronic versus mechanical? I do not like that someone can actually set the frequency of winning results. I prefer the mechanics of a gears and wheels machine." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

JohnRich 4 #4 October 30, 2008 Are they promising to reduce your school taxes by the amount to be raised by the slots? Or will this be revenue above and beyond that?
SpeedRacer 1 #5 October 30, 2008 well, I guess it's more like they won't raise our taxes, because right now they don't have enough. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
SpeedRacer 1 #6 October 31, 2008 I'm getting ads saying that the slots will lose more money than they make due to "addiction" & supposed increases in crime. I don't know where they get their figures from. But it seems to me that any rational adult ought to be able to handle themselves & not lose their mind just because there's a slot machine nearby. I realize that some people are prone to addictive gambling, but on the whole, I think most people can & should be able to handle themselves. People make personal choices for better or for worse, that is what being an adult is all about. But, I'm not responsible for my own behavior. What is government for if not to tell me how I should live my own life? If I gamble away all my money and my kids go hungry, and I can't blame the government for making me do it, then where the heck does that leave me?
