popsjumper 2 #1 October 27, 2008 Here's something I've never really understood as it pertains to politicians changing their views over time. Politicians regularly get hammered for changing their stance/belief on specific issues. I'm sure you can think of many instances where a politician votes one way today whereas he had voted differently in the past. Couldn't this change in belief be a valid result of more educated learning? More advanced thinking? Technologiacal advances? Changing demographics? Or whatever? Is it always a mere political ploy to garner votes or an indication of incompetence? What I don't really understand is the unthinking willingness of the general population to jump on the "Political-Ploy" bandwagon being driven by political opponents. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. Falcon5232, SCS8170, SCSA353, POPS9398, DS239
MikeForsythe 0 #2 October 27, 2008 Here is my view on it and it applies to BOTH candidates and politicians in general. Politicians will say whatever it takes to get and stay elected. Yes, you are right in that there are those times when they have a valid reason given updated or additional information to support the change but more often than not it is for political gain and therefore overshadows the times when it is valid. Hell, we have seen both candidates in this election change a position the same day. The problem also is that voting records are like the internet, once there, it is for life.Time and pressure will always show you who a person really is! Is it always a mere political ploy to garner votes or an indication of incompetence? Quite often it's clearly the latter. SF mayor Newsome, best known for disregarding state law and successfully forcing the issue of gay marriage to the courts, suddenly became a bit more of a law and order type right around the time his exploratory governor campaign started. Democratic candidates for president instantly develop a history and appreciation for hunting, despite a decade or more of gun control lobbying. Republicans drop their small government is best BS as soon as they can get pork for their own district. A more honest reversal is likely to happen over time, with a trail of evidence to show the migration.
