Darius11 12 #1 October 15, 2008 I don’t know if its because I was not born here, I don’t know if my expectations are too high, but when ever I thought of America I thought of a fair land. We set the standard in humanity I thought. I am so frustrated that the very country I love the idea of America is so easily manipulated by the weak and fearful. Below is a list of things we do or said we will do that we didn’t 8 years ago. The suspension of Habeas corpus Preemptive strikes Torture CIA Plains to send people to get tortured in other countries The willingness to use nuclear weapons on non nuclear countries The loss of personal freedoms The Fiasco with the justice department (I don’t recall) The Fiasco with the economy Use of mercenary forces with no international over site. Braking international law Stating that we are and all our forces are above international law. Taking, Stealing tax payers money to help big companies. To me these were the things we used to stand against, now we are the ones who have become the violator. I don’t know maybe I fantasized that we stood for justice, and held ourselves to a higher standard, did I? I hope all of you, Right, left, whatever realize the significant change that has takin place. I understand that some of you might even think it is a good thing, but lets not forget what made this country great in the first place. The Idea of America, and American justice used to be legendary in my mind and I know in the minds of many others. I know a lot of us including most of your ancestors came here because of some kind of justice. Not all of us were Hungary, poor and looking to take jobs. Many of us wanted better for ourselves and not just in financial matters, but a better place in every way. I love this country and I feel like I am watching it crumble. Not wall street, not Main Street, not the loss of jobs, or even the war. It is every thing that has changed the Idea of America, and it truly saddens me. I feel we will make it trough any storm if we stay true to what we stand for. I feel we lose when we sacrifice these great ideas of freedom for fear. I feel the true patriots would be willing to lose safety over freedom. I hope we get back on the right track.I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

Braking international law Stating that we are and all our forces are above international law. Taking, Stealing tax payers money to help big companies. Unfortunately, this is nothing new with America. I'll list some out: Suspension of habeas corpus was done by Lincoln during the Civil War (and people still list him as the great civil libertarian. ) Check out Ex Parte Milligan, where he got relief from Lincoln trying him in a military tribunal outside of civil court. (Bush is a modern day Lincoln, folks.) Pre-emptive strikes are not new. "Remember the Maine" was the jingo used for a pre-emptive strike on Spain in 1898, starting the Spanish American War. Much like non-existent WMD's were beaten to death for Iraq, a non-existent Spanish torpedo was beaten to death to get it. Torture? The CIA was involved in torture in Southeast Asia in the 50's-70's and in Central America in the 80's, but they are not boy scouts. Guess how they knew what countries would let help them with torture. Willingness to use nukes on non-nuclear countries? in August of 1945, Japan learned that. Loss of personal freedoms? See Lincoln and habeas corpus. How about Japanese in WWII? the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed in 1798! The Sedition Act of 1918 was passed at the behest of the enlightened Woodrow Wilson, which prevented speaking out aganst the government during the Great War. Loss of personal freedoms? See above with Lincoln, Roosevelt, Wilson, etc.. Justice Deparment fiasco? That's nothing. Google "Petticoat Affair" for cabinet wranglings. And good luck to you in the 40's and 50's if you were accused of being a communist. Fiasco with the economy? Look back to 1999-2002 for something pretty similar. 1987 is good, too. The whole of the 1970's. And there was a doozy from 1929 to about 1945. Use of mercenary forces without international oversight? Seems to me that Jimmy Carter laid some good groundwork with funding and arming the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan in the 1970's. Let us not forget the Contra affair. Breaking International Law? That's a chuckler. Name a POPTUS whose policies didn't do that daily. Putting our forces above international law? Seems to me that America has a long history of doing that. It's why we dip our flag to nobody - even at the Olympics. Taking taxpayer money to help big companies? Name a war. All were fought with products mnufactured by big companies. (Note - with $750 billion, you can buy General Electric, Microsoft and Wal-Mart. Who is the biggest company? The amount of money the US Govt. tosses around is MIND BOGGLING) These are things we ALWAYS stood against, and did anyway. This is not a big change taking place. It's far from unprecedented. It's not even being fear-mongered any more than has been in the past. As for me, I simply think it's wrong and bullshit. I don't need that it is unprecedented or has happened in the past. It makes it no better or worse to me. My wife is hotter than your wife.
