You actually think that it should be our (gun owners) responsibility to educate and win over people who have made the choice to hold irrational, illogical, bigoted and uninformed opinions of guns and gun owners?

(The push-poll style of your question aside...)
If you want to be productive, then Yes. But, if you prefer to throw up your hands and have impasse, then choose impasse.

It's just that, all the information is out there for people to learn and understand. It really seems that people who hold the anti-gun beliefs do so despite the fact that they should be able to see why they're flawed; and yet, they choose to cling to those beliefs anyway.

You take a Chuck Schumer, NY senator (and former congressman). He is as anti-gun, pro-gun-ban as they come. He cannot claim that he has never read or been told all of the things that SHOULD make him see that gun control and gun bans are misguided.

We've all called his office, e-mailed him, mailed him, written letters to editors, pointing out that "assault weapons" are not machine guns; that "assault weapons" are used in less than 1% of crimes; that gun control's origins are rooted in racial bigotry; that concealed carry laws have been associated with decreased crime, and NOT "shootouts in the streets"...

Are you going to tell me that this man, and his ilk, simply haven't been "reached" by a kindly gun owner? Bullshit. This man's anti-gun bigoted views are deliberately held, and he is intransigent. Many is the anti-gun voter who has been told plenty of times why his position is intellectually void, who clung to it nonetheless. It certainly is not because we pro-gunners are bellicose.

This has what to do with the discussion of gun control at hand? :S

I guess that when cornered about something you're wrong about, your best defense is to dredge up some unrelated thing you were right about, as though it has a bearing on the current discussion?

How am I wrong about the FACT that all we know about warpedskydiver is what he put in his profile, and that isn't much.

Then this is where you either rise to, or squander, the opportunity to change people's attitudes (or guide those attitudes, if they're undecided or on the fence) by patiently educating those people, rather than just turning them off by speaking ill of them.

I've tried that and found that it doesn't work with many people because their position is based on emotion.

I've pointed out facts about people being safer where there are more guns, white people being safer in Seattle than Vancouver, crimes against people going up and down with new gunlaws making posession/cary harder (more crime) and easier (less), the small number of accidents, etc.

I've talked about how frequently formerly law abiding citizens misuse guns, like the single crime (by a corrupt police officer) involving a legally owned machine gun.

I've pointed out that only cosmetic differences separate "semi automatic assault weapons" from normal guns like a bayonet mounting lug, and that the most popular American made example isn't legal for deer hunting in most states because it's not powerful enough.

After a lot of pressing, the real answer comes out as a simple emotional statement like "I just don't like guns" or "If you had children and something happened to them you'd be against guns"

Having them shoot a .22 pistol doesn't help.

The only thing that has converted those people is the current state of America.

I've gotten some anti-gun people to conceed that we may need guns to protect ourselves from a tyranical government or the rest of the people when civilization collapses.
