PhreeZone 20 #1 September 22, 2008 It seems that the 3 Presidental debates will be a pretty open format with a series of questions as starter questions but will be allowed freedom to branch out from there with direct debating between Obama and McCain. The VP debate will be more structured and will be a series of Q/A questions posed by the moderator and less direct debating between the two canidates. This format for the VP debate was originally requested by the McCain campaign since the VP's will be limited to a single 90 minute debate and they wanted to stay on topic for the entire debate. This might help Biden also since he can't go off with his long winded speaches that he is infamous for. I am not firmilar with Gwen Ifill and her background, how will she do as a moderator? The topic for the first debate this Friday was to be the economy but McCain's team convinced the panel last week it should be about foreign policy instead and the economy later. This has a huge advantage for McCain since he has a much better foreign policy background to debate from and the first debate historically has the largest number of viewers. First presidential debate: foreign policy and national security, moderated by Jim Lehrer Friday, September 26, University of Mississippi, Oxford, Miss. -- Two-minute answers, followed by five-minute discussion for each question. Vice presidential debate: all topics, moderated by Gwen Ifill Thursday, October 2, Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. -- Ninety-second answers, followed by two-minute discussion for each question. Two-minute closing statements. Second presidential debate: all topics in town meeting format, moderated by Tom Brokaw Tuesday, October 7, Belmont University, Nashville, TN -- Two-minute answers, followed by one-minute discussion for each question. Third presidential debate: the economy and domestic policy, moderated by Bob Schieffer Wednesday, October 15, Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y. -- Two-minute answers, followed by five-minute discussion for each question. Two-minute closing statements.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

Gwen Ifill is from a very traditional newspaper background, moved into TV, PBS, pundit circuit and moderated the Cheney / Edwards VP debate in 2004. She'll be good.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Muenkel 0 #3 September 22, 2008 Is there a neutral 3rd party who gave approval on what the moderators can ask? Jim Lehrererererer, Tom Brokaw and Bob Schieffer are in the tank for Obama. I miss Tim Russert. _________________________________________ Chris

A little birdie told me. You shouldn't listen to birdbrains. Seriously, of all the people in the media that might be and are willing to bring some sort bias into an interview, I think Lehrer, Ifill, Brokaw and Schieffer are among the people we should least worry about. If, for instance, George Will or Sam Donaldson had been picked, you may have had a point, but these guys?!? Is ya kiddin' me?quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Muenkel 0 #8 September 22, 2008 Hey! Don't mock birdbrains...I'm one of them.I have to admit that in your last post, you do have a point. I still think that Lehrer, Brokaw and Schieffer are more left leaning though. _________________________________________ Chris
Muenkel 0 #9 September 22, 2008 I just want to add one more thing regarding the debates. They are the next hurdle for all 4 candidates. Right now the polls are basically stagnant with both candidates leading in various internals. I think once the debates begin, we will see movement in the polls. I personally hate these really close elections. They drive me completely nuts. I know some people think close elections are a good thing. I'm not saying they're good or bad, I just have no patience. _________________________________________ Chris
