Just another reason people make me sick...

Recommended Posts

Before I tell this story I want to write a little disclaimer. The first part of this story is just for background and to set the stage for the second part. It’s the second part of the story that really gets under my skin. I really do not care what others think of the actions of myself or the other two people who were sitting in first class on Thursday evening. I am not looking to be told how what we did was right or wrong, I am only telling the first part so you will understand the second part.

Thursday I had to fly from South Carolina to Iowa. I fly a lot for work, and in doing so I am in a position where I rarely if ever have to fly anything but first class due to my frequent flyer miles. The flight had a stop in Cincinnati with about an hour layover. When they started boarding in Cincinnati I noticed that there were 3 members of the military who were on our plane. I over heard one of them talking about how they had been overseas and were looking forward to going home.

After boarding the plane I settled into my normal routine of getting some water and reading my book. When the soldiers began to board the plane a gentlemen offered one of the soldiers his seat in first class. As soon as I heard what he said I and another gentleman decided to switch seats with them as well so they could all 3 be in first class together. (They were being seated in coach not first class). At first the soldiers were kinda put out and somewhat embarrassed (at least I think they were), but after a little convincing they (and the flight attendant) agreed.

So the three of us are now headed back to coach. I gotta be honest, I was thinking that what we had done was a pretty good thing. I felt that there are times when you just gotta do that random act of kindness and that showing gratitude for their service to our country was not a bad thing.

About half way back to our new seats I hear some of the passengers commenting about how they felt what we had done was a good thing. I was a little embarrassed by the attention, but still thinking we had done the right thing.

Here is the part that just makes me nuts...

Then I hear people making comments about how we (we being myself and the two other gentlemen who had given up our seats) were stupid for giving those baby killers our seats. That those people should not be allowed to fly on this plane let alone deserve to fly in first class. I was awed... disgusted... repulsed... and then I was just flat out fucking pissed.

I turned to give one of them (being the people making comments about the baby killers) a piece of my mind but was to late. One of the others who had given up his seat was already on the job. That guy was so pissed I think he either made up a few new words or certainly had a better command of the English language than I do. It was not pretty to say the least. He did have the presence of mind to calm down as the flight attendants were coming to see what the heck was going on.

After the plane took off I hear the same group of people continuing to make comments about the soldiers. While I certainly agree that those people are entitled to their opinion, and, it is their right to say what they think, it was sad to see the reaction of the 3 people we had given our seats to. To their credit they didn’t say a word, but you could tell that they wanted to.

Shortly after landing the flight attendant made a comment of thanks to the soldiers over the intercom (as is often done when soldiers are flying) and the plane applauded them. I was appalled when the same group of people who made the baby killer comments started booing. People really do make me sick sometimes....

I personally do not think that what is going on over seas should have any bearing on a persons opinion of the people who serve our country. I can understand people being both pro and anti war. But taking it our on people who are there doing what our country has asked them to do makes me sick.

well done, for you and the others who 'stood down' to coach...

real decent of all of you.:|

babykillers?????? what moron would take that attitude
regarding any young Man or Woman, who has
joined the service....

While i do NOT think highly of the war in Iraq...

i would direct my anger at the LEADERS,,,,,the Politicians, the "deciderer".....
and NEVER at the soldiers... in many respects, they too are victims of the war... despite heroic and stalwart actions, based on their enlistment oaths...
Not sure who said it... But WAR IS hell...
nobody really wins... and the ones who "start it" do not often think it through,,, before barging ahead....and as we will witness here shortly.... Those who brought about this calamity, ( Bush Cheney Rumsfeld, and their "advisors" ) will simply disappear into their retirements, write their memoirs, collect their pensions, enjoy secret service protection, and leave the mess,,,, in the hands of others....
fine piece of leadership......:S:(>:(>:(

may those and all returning service persons be spared the horror, which is.. P T S Syndrome....

I'd rather see AirForce One used to bring troops home from that quagmire, in palatial comfort,,,instead of used to cart GWB from DC to crawford,, or ANYwhere for that matter,, in a style FAR beyond first Class travel....and way beyond what he has 'earned', based on his lousey tenure these past 8 years....

good for you and the other 2....
good for the returing soldiers...
and shame on the naysayers,,

Thanks for sharing that story, and thanks for your gesture to give the soldiers a little extra boost. Worry not about those that are ignorant beyond the point of pity. ;)

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life

That was a really nice thing you and the other passengers did about exchanging seats with the service members. The idiots that were booing are just that idiots and are not representive of any thing other then their own stuipdity.

That makes my blood boil. Kudos for keeping the situation under control. I would have had a hard time not blowing my top in a major way. And it seems that these jackasses continue to grow in numbers.
The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Wow. Just wow.

I wonder who those people support for POTUS?

So you take a story about respect for service members and try to turn it into a partisan political comment? Real classy.

I served two tours in Afghanistan and was severely wounded and disabled at the end of the second by a suicide bomber. Care to guess who I support for POTUS?

Thank you for your sacrifice. I appreciate it. Most of your country appreciates it, with the exception of a few asshats. I would only care to guess who you support if you had been one of the people on that plane denegrating soldiers. I'm certain they were card carrying conservatives.
Please don't dent the planet.

I'd also like to point out the activities of the fine folks at Westboro Baptist Church, who protest at the funerals of fallen service members. They believe that God is killing our troops because we're too nice to gay people. I wonder who those people support for POTUS?

What I object to is your attempt to tie Obama supporters to the assholes on that plane.

I think the vast majority of Obama supporters would not condone such behavior, just like to vast majority of McCain supporters don't condone Westboro.

On the other hand, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution, which expressly recognizes the right to free speech. I fully believe those assholes (both groups) have the right to say whatever they want. I also fully believe that the 99% of the rest of the population, including Obama supporters, has the right to tell them to fuck off.

Not to take anything away from your story but I have never heard anyone, even from the extreme left make anything close to statements like that.

I would have thought the airline could have denied them the flight because they posed a very real threat to the safety of the flight.

To say you know who they are voting for is a very cheap shot and distracted from the story.

Keep in mind what candidate has repeatedly voted against more funding for the VA and said the increased GI college funding the democrats and GOP proposed was too generous and would cause military members not to re-enlist because they could leave and get an education.

How about Greens.... or some of the other fringe left/anarchists.

Your attitude here shows the true nature of the conservative "If you aint with us you are against us"

I supported our efforts in Afghanistan.. you know... the country where the people trained who actually did attack us.

I also did not support the stupidity.. from the start of the war in Iraq. I think you will find several of us at the time forwarned of exactly the kind of mess it has turned out to be.>:(
Hopefully when these young people who do serve will not be forgotten by the people who sent them to war in the first place, like they seem to be doing... till they were caught at it by those who DO give a damn about them.

The people who led us into the mess and have acted with incompetence will get off not scott free but also a dice little profit.

I think you will find that MOST Americans do appreciate the sacrifices made by the troops themselves. I do as well and will support them even AFTER they come home, and in the future when they will really need that help.

Now go ahead and attack me as a terrorist sympathizer... and unpatriotic.. others of your ilk have in the last 5+ years here because I dont want YOUR WAR.

This is where the First Amendment works its miracle. By ensuring they are able to express their craziness, the rest of the country sees them for what they are. To muzzle them, martyrs them in a way.

I may be wrong but I don't think you have the right to make comments like that on an airliner. and I can't see the pilot letting them fly if this story is correct.

To answer the question in the post I responded to...

I think they will vote for who ever they choose to vote for.

The rest is not necessarily directed at that poster.

I think that showing that kind of disrespect for those who protect that very same freedom (insert your part of the constitution here) is so pathetic that it is just sad. It should be said that the guy who I described as beating me to the punch ( no pun intended) really made the soldier haters look stupid. When the flight attendants got there he was asking how specifically these people knew they were baby killers, and, where that information came from.

When the group just looked at him blank faced he asked them how they could be such sheep to just follow orders and the opinions of others (just like they were accusing the soldiers of doing during the argument they were having with him). It was funny when the light went off and they realized they had no response. Unfortunately, thats when they started making really rude comments (that I will not write here) about them. It was a sure sign that they didn’t have a valid argument and resorted to 2nd or 3rd grade playground tactics...

Also, what the hell does any of this have to do with being left, right, middle, or any other fucking side of the fence.... What happened to those people has nothing to do with any political party. This is about people who risk their lives for our country, not anyone’s opinion of the war, who should or should not be the President, or even an individuals perception of the military in general. I believe there is a certain amount of respect that those people deserve, regardless of a persons feelings about the situation that has caused them to be in harms way.

And jclalor, the story is true. The reason it didn’t go as far as you are describing was because the guy who was defending them simply turned and sat down when the flight attendant told him to and dropped it. The comments I described after we took off were made to each other and not directed at him. They were laughing about it while doing it. Why does there always have to be that one guy who acts like if someone is telling a story that it should be suspect.... I think you will find that I am not one of the more radical posters on here when it come to subjects like this one...

1) They shouldn't be that overtly rude, ever, about any issue.

2) They should have the right to think that, just not verbalize it.

3) Nice job.

Ditto. The balme falls on the trash in the WH and the sheer, pure geniuses who voted them in.

?? Making absurd political comments has nothing to do with your ability as a passenger to safely make the flight. Sure, the pilot has a right to kick them off - but going by those standards, the pilot would have the equal right to kick off a serviceman when _he_ thought that that serviceman was a jerk. And that wouldn't seem to be a very smart approach for an airline.

As a Viet Nam vet, I say...

My hat's off to you. Thank you.

Irrespective of the political leadership at the time...without the soldiers to defend the constitution:

- In the most-distant past we may have wound up speaking the Queen's english.
- In the not-so-distant past (twice, mind you) we may have wound up speaking German. Never mind the Japanese in the second instance.
- In the less-distant past, we may have wound up speaking Russian.
- In the near-past, we could have been speaking one of the Arabic languages.

Thanks ALL you guys. I'm happy speaking American english.

I don't think if I boarded a plane and and in a loud voice accuse the passenger sitting with his wife and children in the seats in front of me of raping his children and beating his wife that I would fly very far. Board an airplane and start espousing the virtues of why we were attacked on 911 while wearing a Bin Laden T-shirt and see what that gets you. The right to free speech is not an absolute. You could say it all you want in the airport but board a plane and things change.

I think that a pilot would be obligated to remove any passenger that appeared being very capable of inciting violence after a flight was airborne.

Nor would you fly far if you told him that you would kill him. But we're discussing stupid political positions, not provocations of violence.

I've had to deal with just that - and believe it or not, no one died on the ride.

Even if, in his judgment, the people with the most training for violence - and the most able to use it - were those soldiers? I think you'd scream bloody murder if the pilot kicked the soldiers off the plane because he knew of other soldiers who were violent criminals. A better course of action for the pilot would be to leave the soldiers and the idiots with the stupid opinions alone.
