McCain campaign announces change

McCain Announces New Campaign
Jack Florey/Onion News Service
September 9, 2008

MIAMI - After several months of campaigning on a steady message of GOP values, the McCain/Palin campaign today announced a change to align themselves better with their opponent's message of change. Their new campaign slogan, "Change is Coming," replaces their earlier slogan "The Change you Deserve," which was abandoned after it was discovered that it was identical to the slogan for the antidepressant drug Effexor. The new slogan is remarkably similar to the Barack/Biden campaign slogan, "The Change We Need."

"Well, if you can't beat them, join them," said McCain campaign spokesperson Jill Hazelbaker during a press conference to announce the change on Tuesday. "We're going to prove to people that we can change just as rapidly as Obama can. Faster, even."

The first and most visible change in their campaign was the naming of Alaskan governor Sarah Palin as McCain's vice president. "We realize that Americans are tired of the vice president being relegated to a second-in-command who wastes their time in the Senate," said Hazelbaker, apparently referring to the Vice President's constitutional role as President of the Senate."Instead, we've changed the role of the VP to one of sexy celebrity campaign spokesperson."

When asked what her role would be after the election, Hazelbaker replied "Here's a picture of Sarah in the Miss Alaska Beauty Contest. And Senator McCain was a prisoner of war."

McCain spent the day outlining his long history of change. "I was against the Bush tax cuts for the rich before I was for them," he told a packed audience at Pennsylvania State University. "I used to support Roe vs. Wade, and I now support reversing it and returning the decision to the states. I am now even opposed to the estate tax, a cause I once supported."

Before leaving he promised more changes in the future. "I will make a pledge to you - each one of you here - that I will change my position on at least four more critical issues before the election. Let's see if Obama can make that kind of a pledge. By the way, did I mention I was a prisoner of war?"

GOP pundit Mark Schlatter explained one apparent contradiction in McCain's new message. "True, McCain voted with Bush 95% of the time in 2007. But what his opponents overlook is that he did not do it in his usual location, and he changed his location, orientation and style each time. Obama voted in exactly the same location as the current vice president, every single time. Every single time," he repeated. "What kind of change is that?"

Hazelbaker echoed McCain's criticism of the Obama campaign. "Look at their choices. Look at his vice presidential pick. Joe Biden looks similar to all the other politicians in Washington, with his suit and his white hair. We're planning to have Senator McCain wear denin workshirts and workboots to reinforce his image as an unpredictable maverick, and we plan to paint the White House red to show the world how much change we're capable of. What has Obama changed? His basic message has barely changed since he started campagining for president. That's not a message of change, that's a message of same."

The Obama campaign was quick to respond to the charges, claiming "we thought of the change thing first." Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said that they would be filing lawsuits in the battleground states of Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania to prohibit McCain campaigners from using the word "change" or acting or dressing differently than traditional GOP campaigners.

An Obama campaign official, speaking on condition of anonymity, remarked that "it will be difficult for Obama to change as much as McCain at this point, since he has that printed book out that describes his positions. McCain can just change his website. It's not really fair."

When asked if the McCain campaign would have any unchangeable core platforms, such as tax relief or educational reform, Hazelbaker replied "we'll leave the effete academic elitists to squabble over the irrelevant political details. The important part is that they'll change. Here's a picture of Sarah Palin, and McCain was a POW. That's what you should take away from this."

There ya' go! Pick a very attractive female running mate... can't miss. after all, sex sells! I'm tired of McCain referring to himself as a 'maverick'! Does he realise, a 'maverick' is just a stray, un-branded cow? He's not foolin' me! I think, he's a has-been and neck deep in the Washington politics and if, he wins the election, i think, it'll just be 'business as usual'. I don't care what he says.

You got it. Palin is an instant appeal inject to motivate the republican base, problem is that they are targeting people who generally vote on party lines rather than examine candidates. McCain is a genuine war hero and would more or less be a decent president, assuming that all you wanted was for the U.S. not to completely fall apart....sarcasm.

Palin on the other hand is a muppet, who is being sequestered by the republican campaign machine. She can only repeat what is fed to her. If you watch her speech at the RNC and all her other appearances you just hear repetitive static, almost like a parrot. McCain even seems to glare to her from the corner of his eye hoping that she won't slip up.

I personally feel that he knows she isn't vice-presidential material but c'mon what choice did he have? If he selected Romney, Huckabee or Ridge all he would have is 2 white guys with more than 7 houses in 3 time zones.

For all the women out there speak up and tell us whether you think she can be president. I think Hillary was capable enough, I don't think she could be stared down too much, Hillary and Putin in a room, no problem, Palin and Putin? hard to imagine the bloodletting....

Vote for Obama and Joe Biden,

remember there is :no such thing as a Liberal or Conservative America, only a United States of America" Obama 2004 DNC

I think, he nailed it! Palin said she fought against the 'btidge to no-where'. Not quite! She got Federal money to be spent on 'whatever'. That money, went to the bridge from Kechikan to a tiny island. She claims, she sold the executive jet on e-bay... at a profit. Not quite! It was on e-bay but, did not sell. It was sold through a broker at a loss. She claimed to have fired her 'executive chef' at the governor's mansion. Yes, she did. Then, turned around and got her a job as an executive chef for the Alaska state house. The McCain bunch is twisting the truth about her so as to 'sell' her to the voters. McCain is just using old, cheesy tactics to get the presidency and is really pushing the fact that he was a P.O.W. He wasn't the only P.O.W... just the only one running for president. I wouldn't buy a used car from the guy!

seemingly yes, but like I indicated in the post, she has been squestered by her handlers, and is not taking questions from reporters. Have you seen her speak? Its weird and contrived, repeating the same thing over and over, McCain picked her to have a popularity contest, Obama picked Biden because he is qualified to be president. This choice indicates a lack of integrity.

Also do yourself a favor and watch Palin's sports broadcasts when she was a "sports anchor". They speak for themselves.

Furthermore I have no political persuasion, did you read the quote at the end of my post? There is no such thing as a liberal or conservative America only a United States of America, all else is just polarization of the issues.

I watch several news sources. I happened to catch the story where I did. Where do you get your news?

Chuck

Many internet sites. Talk radio. Newspapers. News Magazines. On line news sites. On line news papers.

I no longer watch ABC, CBS, NBC CNN NPR or any TV sites. They are for the most part bogus and full of shit.

As for you post. Do a little more research. Much info has come to the forefront in the last 48 hours. Most does not support your claims

Dude be serious its common knowledge that Alaska is THE biggest pork barrel state in the Union, with about 230 something dollars of pork per Alaskan, a comparative figure is Illiniois with about 30 a person and 20 times the pop. Also Palin supported the Bridge to No Where like nobody's business. Its all over every political commentary, The ebay jet thing as well, hell you can do a short google search to view the actual documents that clearly indicate her pork barrel ways.

Bottom line folks, SEN. McCain would be a decent president but he cannot be taking Americans serious when he chooses Palin as his running mate, this decision clearly shows that all he cares about is winning the election and in my opinion has questioned his integrity.

I suspect it will become clear in time that the others possible candidates refused, SEN. Romney for example frequently commented on McCain's ill-tempered disposition as a big negative during the Republican nominee campaign.

See below for item 1 ("fought against the bridge to nowhere.") Also a quote from Palin: "We need to come to the defense of Southeast Alaska when proposals are on the table like the bridge and not allow the spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that's so negative,"

Item 2, jet sold on Ebay for a profit:

EBay got a huge plug Wednesday night when, trying to depict herself as a tight-fisted reformer, GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said she put an Alaska state jet on eBay.

But the Westwind II jet never sold on eBay.

According to PolitiFact, the plane, bought by her Republican predecessor whom she beat in 2006, was listed for sale three times on the San Jose internet auction giant. But no one ever met the minimum bid. The plane was listed with an asking price of $2.5 million in 2007. The state had paid just under $2.7 million for it in 2005.

Finally, the state turned to an aircraft broker, who sold the jet to an Alaskan businessman for $2.1 million.

Item 3, executive chef:

Remember the long-time executive chef who lost her job at the Mansion when Sarah decided to live mostly in Wasilla instead of Juneau? Stefani Marnon was first reassigned as a "constituent relations assistant" in the governor's office and later to the state museum.

Earwigs report she's finally landed where they really appreciate a good chef: the Legislative Lounge.

I don't think that's true. I think she's just sort of out of her league. Remember, this is a woman who didn't quite know what a vice president did (by her own admission) a month ago. She's making the usual rookie mistakes - making claims about her record that are easy to demonstrate are false - but I have a feeling she will learn quickly. She's not dumb or easily intimidated by what I've seen of her so far.

making claims that are easy to demonstrate as false? you mean lying about herself right? Obviously we would not be speaking of her if she was not someone to be reckoned with, yes she will learn quickly, but I think the learning she will receive is the type of skills a African Grey Parrot learns. Keep in mind she has 8 weeks to learn.
