quade 4 #26 September 4, 2008 Quotepussies! what happened to using brains and eyes, the usual response to any gear reliance threads in other forums here? And what about all the times people still miss the LZ even with a GPS? I was pretty sure somebody would bring up some sort of non-sense like this. Yes, eye, brains and wit can eventually take you out of a bad situation. A GPS can potentially do it MUCH quicker. My personal feeling is if you don't have one at this point, you're simply being foolish. A PLB isn't a bad idea either. Don't think of it as "gear reliance," think of it as a fucking reserve. No, you don't want to "have" to use it, but if you do need it, you NEED it.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

And what about all the times people still miss the LZ even with a GPS? I use my map and compass most of the time due to the map having terrain details. The GPS doent show any details like that. But when the snow was flying and I couldnt see 1/8 mile or any terrain features the GPS was my hero.If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! Rookie120 0 #28 September 4, 2008 Quotethe new ones with LED's last longer.. and the batteries can be the small AAA I like the LED when I am guttin or doing something up close. I dont like the LED for trackin. The LED just doesnt seem to have the candle power to punch a good beem of light out a good distance. I carry a Mag charger. Not just the plain Mag light. The Mag Charger had a hefty battery that recharges plus it has a halogen bulb that has some serious candlewatt power. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! warpedskydiver 0 #30 September 4, 2008 QuoteGood list to start.. You may want to add an internal farme pack.. add some large grommets to it so you can lash a gamebag on. Firesteel to replace the lighter. Add a waterproof matchcase filled with cotton balls.. STUFFED. much better for starting a fire. http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/tools/754d/ http://www.rei.com/product/678278 Wiresaw to replace the bonesaw. 50' of 1/4" dacron rope and a couple aluminum blocks(pullies) to hoist the carcass off the ground to finish skinning it out of the dirt.. also helps to debone hanging. Later the rope can be used to create tripods to put the gamebags into the upper tripod.. to keep the meat from scavengers. I always carry a couple extra pairs of REI RAG wool socks to keep my feet dry and prevent blisters. replace the seat pad with a good space blanket.. not mylar.. multiuse.. sit on it when you stop...use as a ground cloth when deboning..etc.. http://www.rei.com/product/407106 Amen on the dry clean socks, without your feet you are FUCKED! kelpdiver 2 #31 September 4, 2008 BTW, I've had a GPS for 8 (?) years - a garmin g12. Never actually used it for more than just as a toy. I'd view it closer to an AAD than a reserve - there could be a circumstance where it would be highly useful, but odds are I fucked up 4 different ways first.
