GOP VP candidate Palin's daughter is pregnant
17-year-old Bristol to keep the child and marry the father

ST. PAUL - The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin's five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.

We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," the Palins' statement said.

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support," the Palins said.

The Palins asked the news media to respect the young couple's privacy.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates," the statement concluded.

McCain knew

Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter's pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.

In the short period since she was announced last Friday, Palin has helped to energize the Republican Party's conservative base, giving the McCain camp fresh energy going into the campaign for the Nov. 4 election against Democrat Barack Obama.

McCain officials said the news of the daughter's pregnancy was being released to rebut what one aide called "mud-slinging and lies" circulating on liberal blog sites.

According to these rumors, Sarah Palin had faked a pregnancy and pretended to have given birth in May to her fifth child, a son named Trig who has Down syndrome. The rumor was that Trig was actually Bristol Palin's child and that Sarah Palin was the grandmother.

A senior McCain campaign official said the McCain camp was appalled that these rumors had not only been spread around liberal blog sites and partisan Democrats, but also were the subject of heightened interest from mainstream news media.

"The despicable rumors that have been spread by liberal blogs, some even with Barack Obama's name in them, is a real anchor around the Democratic ticket, pulling them down in the mud in a way that certainly juxtaposes themselves against their 'campaign of change,"' a senior aide said.

I guarantee that was probably one of the first things Gov. Palin said to him in the final vetting process...

It went something like this I bet:

McCain: Good Morning Governor, nice to see you again. Please sit dow---
Palin: Bristol's pregnant.

...and so on...;)
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Question from an ignorant Brit; is Bristol a common name? It's just I can't read about this story without wondering why you'd name a daughter after a provincial city in the west of England that used to be quite big on slavery...

In all seriousness, McCain has got to come clean on whether he knew or not beforehand. It's just not going to fly that he knew about it but just never mentioned it till now. My guess is that Sarah Palin herself didn't know about it until after she was selected as VP.

Any way you slice it, it's a terrible situation for the GOP. Rather than put to rest the other pregnancy, it adds fuel to it.

It's Cockney rhyming slang - you should know that!

No, it's not a common name.

As I understand it was reference to Alaska's Bristol Bay, which features some magnificant natural scenery, e.g., 1, 2, & 3 in addition to being significant for fishing.

I think its funnier than shit... its just another breath of reality for the Party of Morality.

Do as I say.. not as I do.... then again.. it does show how good that whole abstinence thing is working out for the fundies.

Actually, I've heard rumors that it is really Sarah who is pregnant, but Bristol is going to pretend to be the mother.:D

Palen - I don't care if she believes the Earth is only six thousand years old, but I do care she's thinks nothing of shoveling that garbage into young minds. She also thinks the "Pledge of Allegiance" was written by the Founding Fathers . . .

And if anyone says it's not fair to use her pregnant child for political purposes just think about the field day neocons would have had if Chelsie Clinton had done the same thing at 17!

Here's Mrs. WhoNeedsPolarBears when she was a sportscaster. If you can call it that. Looks more like a deer caught in the headlights . . .

Who cares? Is the girl running for VP - because I thought it was her mom. Why would the girls predicament have any bearing on the parent... Not like she made he pregnant.

As I learn more about Palin I am coming to understand the vitriolic attacks.

Why? This woman has a great chance of becoming the first female US Pres. Since she is not a Dem, they have to try and destroy her now..

Simple if you look at it in that perspective.

So you think McCain is going to die in office then?

Sorry no, that is not what I meant. (sorry if my post was confusing)

I do think though that because of his age he will only run one time. That sets her up to be the next Rep. canidate. Her conservative views will make her very popular. So, the left is taking her on now.

I have used the term "bristol condition" all my life when referring to my sailing vessels....

This certainly puts a new twist on that terminology.

Nah, it's not a nautical reference. More anatomical.

Bristol's Bristols. Should be able to make a rugby song out of that.

You mean, she's going to get the same treatment Hillary got from the right?
