Why is this substandard way of speaking becoming more prevalent?

And I guess you missed the point: which was (here's a gimme) that I feel sadly confident that most people just don't know how to do that kind of figuring.

I didn't miss the point; I was just making a joke. And I guess I don't really pay enough attention to what other people are doing when I'm shopping (unless they're in my way) to notice how they're comparing prices. And I've never found the need to carry around a calculator while shopping, since I find it fairly easy to estimate a unit price without one. But it doesn't make me sad to think that someone else might need to use a calculator for such things. :P

Terribly, terribly sad.

The point, I think, is not that I "need" the calculator; the point is, let me ask, do YOU think that many or most people know how to arrive at a price-per-ounce (or pound) price comparison? I just don't have that confidence.

Needing a calculator comes about because I am not able to do the long mulitiplication involved in my head. I'm fine with admitting that. But at least I know how to solve the actual problem.

I wonder, if there was a guy who walks to the store to shop, but he has CP and uses crutches to get there, would you praise him for walking to the store or condemn him because he's so frail he needs crutches and makes no attempt to hide them?

I'm sure that there are a lot of people who don't know how to do that. But I can't generally tell who those people are based on their appearance (looking around at people in WalMart).

Why would I condemn anyone for using crutches if they need them? I didn't condemn you for using a calculator.

Yes, I do. Unless you go shopping in the middle of a trailer park?

Reversing that analogy, does that mean you view yourself as being mentally disabled?

These "substandard" way of speaking is pretty old and has existed in every decade throughout the 20th century in music and some movies. You just weren't paying attention. There's legitimate culture here. Maybe not your culture.

Wrongness is a cultural attribute, huh?

:| What a thing to be proud of.

I can't wait until countries start putting representations of their failure to get a man into space on their flags, now, too.
Beat me to it. And. Unless you're in a 7 11 type store where all the Arabs don't list prices
I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

I think most people can divide one number by another; the majority of them without a calculator. Many people just don't bother - which is also fine. Not everyone has to save thirty one cents on kitty litter.

Some of us were even expected to be able to do it w/o the use of a calculator. Guess that was the difference in the schooling I received.

Did you ever know a child who repeatedly acted out knowing their behavior would end in punishment? They did this because negative attention was preferable to no attention at all.

dude, you're complaining about uneducated people, not being able to speak correctly or to find the cheapest kitty litter in the store, but you can't even divide 50 by 35 without using a calculator?!?!

Are you kidding?

lol I was thinking the same thing. I never use my phone to make those calculations. I just do the math in my head. It's not like you need to know exact amounts. You just need to know which one is cheaper. :D

It's not a culture thing... it's a lack of culture:(.

The kids don't have an decent role models at the moment, but base their sad pathetic lives on that of C-List celebrities.

That wouldn't really explain why the pretty, gainfully employed, [otherwise]sophisticated black woman who said, "I found dat lady ring" in my office would talk like that.

She works in a newspaper advertising office. She has to speak with people in person and on the phone... I can't imagine that they get a positive impression of her when she talks like that in business environs. [:/] Unless she's the kind of person who "turns it on" when in certain company, and off in other company.

I doubt she speaks that way all the time although it may be the way she chooses to speak when in a casual setting. Many people in customer service or sales have the ability to talk in different 'dialects' because it's very helpful to be able to mimic the customer.

I'm the same way and it can be witnessed in every post I make. sometimes I choose to speak, or write in this case, differently based on the nature of the topic and, more specifically, my mood.

That being said....it's nice to see that someone can say "stupid niggers" on this forum and no moderator bats an eye. It wasn't long ago a couple britts were temporarily banned for jokingly calling eachother that. Perhaps it's not what is said, but who says it?

Perhaps it's the reason the words are said.

Go back and read the post in question.

Yeah, I got the impression that she was just pointing out the racist tone of the OP rather than making a racist comment herself.

Is that why your posts are always so negative? You like the attention. :S
