downwardspiral 0 #29 August 13, 2008 I personally am not offended by the the word but I do understand why some are. The use of the word shows a lack of class and a bit of irony IMO. I haven't seen the movie yet so I won't comment on it specifically.www.FourWheelerHB.com

tbrown 26 #32 August 13, 2008 It only offends me when it's directed at someone with Downs. I've got a cousin in law with Downs and anybody who wants to call her a retard can answer to me. Other than that, heck no. I think the whole big stink about this movie is, well.....retarded. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !

Why is it ok for one group to find something offensive, but not another group, and do "challenged" people have the same rights?Afraid to type NIGGER? Talk about PC. Now the question should be is if 'Remtard' is offensive. _________________________________________ Chris

Andy9o8 2 #37 August 13, 2008 I have a relative who is moderately autistic, but functional, albeit in a very narrow range: raw intellect. His demeanor and manner of speech is rather odd, and strangers sometimes think he's "retarded". In fact, he's brilliant, does highly complex mathematics in his head, and has a BS and an MBA from good universities. Like the protagonist in Rain Man, he's probably what used to be called an "idiot savant", but that term is now considered arcane and insulting. I believe the popular term for it today is "autistic savant".
Muenkel 0 #38 August 13, 2008 I don't think your post contained a PA. You were stating an opinion in general. What was retarded was stating that only redneck racists use that term. _________________________________________ Chris

I think thats fair enough, I know a few Doctors who I'd class as idiots. HEY!!! The correct term is intellectually challenged, Thank you! Honestly though Words have power. But, it's not just the words themselves - the context, the tone, the intent of the communication is important. If someone is being demeaning and insulting, that is offensive (and usually intended as such). Is someone is chatting with friends and called her a "biotch" or him a "cracker," that is more banter. LANGUAGE is more than a "bad word."
PLFXpert 0 #49 August 14, 2008 I'm not offended. I try not to use the term, however, because I recognize it's offensive to some. It's the one term deemed "offensive" I've--for whatever reason--neutralized in my head. To me--as a slang term--"retarded" has more to do with someone being an idiot and less to do with anyone with any type of disability. Still, I'm sensitive to others' positions and feel no need to use the term in public for any reason. I'm just as cute and funny without it. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. Gawain 0 #50 August 14, 2008 QuoteNah... it does not offend....except when its one retard calling someone else a retard... to make themselves feel better about being a retard. I was thinking about this while driving around today, I'd bet good money that the special Olympians rib each other from time to time, and I bet the retard word flies all over the place. One can practically envision it in locker room...So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
