What's the problem with separatists?

Recommended Posts

I don't understand why any organization feels it's in their best interest to forcefully demand membership. If Tibet wants to be autonomous, why does China care? Why is Sri Lanka so set on keeping the Tamil Tigers in-house? If Texas wants to secede from the US, why should I care?

Because there is power, resources and economies of scale in having large populations and vast geographic territory.

This can be a bad thing when someone like Hitler with a lebensraum philosophy decides to take over other countries to add to his own power and resources.

And likewise, countries don't like to see pieces of their own getting split off to belong to someone else, and losing that power and those resources.

Damn that Abe Lincoln for not letting the South secede from the United States!

I think the best answer is: "because they can't take it with them":D

Seriously though, I think it has to do with giving up ownership. (waiting for the day my daughter decides to secede her bedroom from my house)

Oh man, JohnRich. You really need to widen your horizon a bit more - since the beginning of mankind, demesne was a stong argument for wars, assaults - it did not need AdolfHitler or GWBush to invent the wheel again ... :P

Becuase Texas has alot that the US needs. Texas is the only state in the US that can stand alone, without the US.

It seems to me that there were 22 states that didn't join the union until after Texas, so I'd consider your claim somewhat suspect.

I'm not sure that's what he means. He's not necessarily talking about groceries.

I think he's talking about the fact that Texas, alone amongst all the states, when it was adopted into the Union in 1845, retained the right to secede if it ever desired to do so. No other state has their Constitution worded in such a way as to allow that.

That Is a good point but not what i was talking about. I was speaking of food sources, energy sources, ports, ability to trade, and jobs.

Ah, I see what you mean.

Of course, the South firmly believed it had the right to secede, too.

This sound familiar in any way to you, Bill?
