Do extremely religious people piss you off?

Recommended Posts

Didn't you hear? The church apologized recently. It's all okay now.

In all seriousness, I don't see where your point is relevant to mine. I never said the two don't cross paths, I was making the point that they each exist to answer different questions.

Er...I used 'virtually' because I didn't mean 'mutually'.

Just to be clear:

Science and religion are virtually exclusive: in other words there's very little, if any, overlap between them.

If they were mutually exclusive, then there'd be zero overlap - which I don't think is true.

Got it.

Though you seem a little confused. If they are mutally exclusive, then only one can be correct, but not the other. It does not quite mean "there'd be zero overlap" as that implies they could coexist.

You also somewhat contradict yourself in that you imply quite possibly zero overlap ("in other words there's very little, if any, overlap"), and then in the following sentence state "...there'd be zero overlap - which I don't think is true."

If by that you mean mutually exclusive, you are dead wrong. I haven't read this whole thread, but the two exist to answer different questions. One does not negate the other.

That's rubbish. The Bible absolutely does overlap with science, people simply choose to ignore the fact. Explaining the universe was one of the reasons the Bible was written, we've just realised that this aspect of it is quite obviously complete bollocks. So rather than toss the whole book in the trash where it belongs, we interpret the bits that are literally bollocks as being metaphorical and claim no foul.

Bollocks or not , the fact that you fail to grasp the purpose Genesis was written, just as the fundie who uses it to justify a 6000 year old earth does not diminish its Truth for those of us who have ears to hear.

Genesis was either written to explain the origin of the universe or it wasn't. Since it appears to try to provide an explaination for the origin of the universe, it's reasonable to assume it was written to try to explain the origin of the universe.

Since you obviously don't think the universe is 6000 years old, you must realise the literal interpretation of Genesis is gibberish and therefore prefer a metaphorical interpretation instead. That is exactly my point and you have illustrated it most clearly. Thanks.

It wasn't.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. ~ Genesis 1:1

So Genesis isn't meant to explain the origin of the universe eh? Then why does the very first line do exactly that? It says goddidit.

Genesis never says anything about a 6000 year old earth. It does say God initiated the creative process. Science has supplied the time frame of approximately 13.75 billion years for the universe and 4.5 billion years for the earth. Plus there is a lot more to Genesis than the brief mention of God's involvement in our creation.

No. They do not bother me. In fact, people who have beliefs and stand for them typically do not annoy me. Even pinko socialists get my respect. Sure, they are often lacking in thought, and have a belief in responsibility for everyone else that is, in my opinion, downright religious, I don't have to agree with them.

Anyone who cannot handle someone else simply because of their religious beliefs should examine himself or herself as to the nature of their hatred.

At least I do have respect for those with balls enough to admit it, though. I'm not pissed off - just wondering why intolerance of religion is so extreme nowadays.

IMHO, religion is for people who can't think for themselves and need to be told what to do and how to do it. Mindless cattle basically.

I have to disagree with you there. I hold religious beliefs, which are mine and which I don't even have to defend, as they're my own business. That said, I am neither mindless, nor especially interested in forcing my beliefs on you. As long as you're a reasonably law abiding person, I don't really care what you do with your life.

But the extremely zealous types piss me off too. Especially at work. I will not debate them about it either, I raise my voice and cut them straight off. Most people are surprised when they see me get angry, as I do it so seldom. That's usually all it takes to shut them up and that's all I really want. Once THEY settle back down, I'm perfectly happy to talk to them about the weather or last night's ball game.

That's not much of a "how."

Nevertheless, you agree that we already have the "who" and this is a "how", a crap one perhaps but it is a "how". So it's clear that Genesis does make a rudimentary attempt to explain the origin of the universe. From this we also must agree that science and religion (in this case at least) do overlap. My point is that people ignore this overlap because the Biblical version of events is so ludicrous it cannot possibly be taken as the literal truth by anyone with an IQ above single digits.

Yeah that's the entire reason it was written. They had no where near the scientific understanding of the world around us that we do today. They didn't have a scientific explanation for it so they made up a fake guy and gave him credit for it. Religion was invented as a way of explaining the unexplainable. However with all the advances in scientific discovery we can now explain a lot of what was previously unexplainable but people refuse to accept this simply because religion is now ingrained in our society.

this right here is a complete demostration of how INVISIBLE much of the religous community is.

There are Catholics, and MANY mainstream Protestant, who do NOT use the Bible as a Science Textbook, and yet we get ignored.

Why do the mainstream moderates get igonored, and the Fundy Extremists get center-stage as the representatives of Christianity?

It is for the same reason that Osama bin Laden gets to represent Islam: A big fight makes the news.

We who are mainstream, sensible and rational, are FAR too borin to make the news. But yet we get lumped into the same category as the irrational Fundies.:S:S

how so? are you saying you accept everything science explains and just accept religion for the things it can't?

edited to add: yes science can't always be correct but the beautiful thing is we continue to study the same things and revise the science behind them. The church revises things maybe once a decade... if that.

People who queitly go about their business without forcing their beliefs on others generally get the same in return. If that's you call being ignored, then yes they're being ignored. Is that not what they want? It's what I want.

Wrong. Religion was created by man for the same reason as any other political system, to wield power over the masses. Spiritual Truth was given to us to unlock our minds, allowing us to see the beauty & love of God. The Bible was never meant to be a science textbook.

I disagree, that is a secondary reason. The main reason religion was started is to explain the unexplainable.
