SBS 0 #76 July 20, 2008 OMG!?!?! Subliminal? There was nothing subliminal about the messages in WallE. Didn't seem like they could have been less subliminal or more "in your face". That aside, I think fat people were not so much offended by their portrayal in the movie, but the fact that they were portrayed so heavily (no pun intended) in such a crappy movie. It seemed to me that they took all of the energy that they had previously put into making groundbreaking, clever, and entertaining movies and poured it into making a bland social commentary. Whether the complaining is justified or not, I expected that it would come, and I have been surprised that we have not heard more out of groups for the ethical treatment of the obese. Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think that their complaint is based on thinking that they were portrayed as those who destroyed the world. The central message was to save the world and not allow ourselves to become overtaken with technology, and one of the negative results of not doing that was to become fat. There is a difference between saying that laziness leads to obesity and obese people are lazy. Unfortunately, though, we are talking about a kid's movie, and sometimes even fully functioning adults cannot reason to that distinction. We can debate the reasons for obesity, but regardless, the image was used as a negative in order to enforce the message, and I would have expected people to be upset about that. I can understand on one hand, but will then turn around and shake my head if they go back and sit on the couch to have a gallon of ice cream. I honestly cannot in any way understand how anyone was entertained by this movie...it garnered the occasional snicker, but much like at the end of Eyes Wide Shut, I was left sitting for a second thinking, "what the hell was that?" I can't leave without a word on Indiana Jones since it was brought up. When I heard that Sean Connery would not return, I was disappointed. When I saw the movie, I hoped that his decision came as a result of reading the script and seeing what a horrific blunder it was going to be. What a serious piece of crap...thanks in no small part to Shia LaDouche. -S_____________ I'm not conceited...I'm just realistic about my awesomeness... That's only because British people are generally harder than American people. 'for it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "chuck 'im out, the brute!" But it's "saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot.'
