Seat belt police

Recommended Posts

I got an idea that I think is fair.

Instead of a ticket from the government, they just copy you on the notice they send to your insurance company that you were seen not wearing the belt. The insurance company then gets to jack up your premiums as they see fit, but within certain guidelines as determined by the proven financial costs of not wearing seat belts.

Combines my favorite preferences in life - - freedom of choice and ownership of consequences.

What if you caused the accident? Maybe you should reinforce the windshield and windows on your car if you are worried about things like this. Its kind of sad really. Using your same logic and reasoning I can argue why skydiving should be outlawed: If I own a home and people are jumping out of airplanes above me, there is a possibility that someone (or piece of gear) could come crashing through my roof endangering me, just so somebody else can get their "kicks". Or I may be working or driving in the area so no dz is safe.

Boy, everyone's really gotten off on the slippery slope stuff, with no sense of proportion. Is it possible that a skydiver might crash into a roof, harming a resident below? Yes, if they have a no pull (rare), and if they are dropping over a neighborhood (not common). It's less probably than being struck by lightning.

But we know that 40,000+ Americas die in car accidents every year - about twice the number of active skydivers in the US - and that the collision count is in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions. Two posters here alone have described impacts of personal experience where the seat belt use was relevant on a side impact.

and no one has yet to show a burden in this rather obvious safety improvement. I know the resentment of being told to do something, esp when you know they're right, but doesn't seem like it warrants a 100+ post thread.

and here I thought the issue was more with the POLICING of such behavior more so than the behavor itself.
I, for one, think seatbelts are a intelligent choice...I just don't think it's the governments job to make sure we use them....which seems to always bring us full circle to "someone else's careless behavior risks me, so we need a law".
Life in itself is an accepted risk.

and since everyone dies, we should ban birth.

Pointing back to the start of my post - people making inane comparisons rather than giving a single reason not to use a seat belt, or why society doesn't benefit from the mandated use on public roads.

Ah. Sane, simple and sensible.
No place for that here.
