Iowa Flooding VS. Katrina

Recommended Posts

It is not about race. It is about blame and dirverting blame.

It all boils down to attitude and who was prepared and why some were not prepared.

Dont let the bs divert you. You are on target. Pulling the race card is a diverter.

LA failed, NO failed and it had nothing to do with color of the people living there, just incompetence.

I have never seen some much bs come up so fast on any thread before this one. Really amazing

it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

> I've always felt the more complicated the explanation the more BS was involved.

I have found precisely the opposite. There are a lot of idiots in the world who think things have one cause, one issue and one solution. These people then apply their one solution and are amazed when it doesn't work.

Alcoholism? Just stop drinking. Problem solved.
Discrimination? Just start affirmative action. That's all we need to straighten things right out.
Iraq? Just invade and depose the government, and they'll greet us as liberators.
Mountain climbing? My kid can climb big hills. Seems simple to me.
Skydiving? It's just pulling your string! Where's the skill in that?

Yep, why don't you grow a pair and say it. "Them there niggers ain't as good as us white folk"

I could compare the circumstances and point out that with the recent flooding, people had some advance warning, fairly clear delineation of where the water would rise and time to withdraw to functional places ...places with stuff like electricity, food, and roofs. Helps getting things accomplished, ya know.

...but that's not going to sway your convictions about racial inferiority now is it?

Because however you meant it, your post is the most racist I have seen on this site

Sorry, no, it wasn't a racist post.

Have you seen the pictures from Iowa of the people looting the liquor stores, carrying away televisions from retail stores, sitting on the roof begging for someone to take care of them, or collected in a football stadium complaining about the food and shelter being provided?

Neither have I

Perhaps that's because the people in Iowa got much quicker and better assistance than the victims of Katrina did. I wonder how many of the unarmed Iowans have been shot in the back by police.

I'm trying to figure out why some people pull the race card..... We are just commenting on the difference of two locations in the country. Unless someone feels there might be different cultures. Kinda like how Maine and Georgia have two different cultures. What are the race ratios between the two?

There's really no doubt that Iowa is a mostly white state, while NO is a mostly black urban city. It seems rather suspect that you claim to not know, but giving you the benefit of the doubt:

Iowa -
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/19000.html
just under 3M people, 94.6% identified as white. 2.5% identified as black.

New Orleans -
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/22/2255000.html
470k people, 67.3% black, 28.1% white.

The Fed gov did not fail in NO …

Yes they did. Bush even admitted it. He just failed to accept responsibility for the failure as he promised to do.

Quote

… the local govs did [fail].

That also occurred.

Why? that is an easy one.

Why are people "assuming" that behavior in one region is tied to race?? Is that the frame of mind with some??

Sadly, some people feel the need to try to rationalize their own racist beliefs however they can.

WOW... it really is a big difference between the two. Thank you for being objective in giving me the benefit of the doubt as I did not know the ratios. I still think there is no excuse to behave in that manner. Raping, killing, looting, etc.....

Does anyone else find it funny that we made a SPORT out of an EMERGENCY PROCEDURE?!?!

A quick Google search makes it clear that the "OP" is a copy & paste of one of those usual horseshit blogs that get e-mailed around. It would have been good form for you to give a cite attribution, instead of presuming we're too stupid to realize it's not your original writing.

Oh by the way, Obama is still not under 40, he's still not a Muslim, and Sirhan still isn't either.

Dave, New Orleans behaved horrible. Rape, killing each other, and looting..... Although the possiblity of an officer firing at someone in the back can exist. I think the difference in elements between what New Orleans police and Iowa police had to deal with are 180 degrees apart. Especially when it came to the community's behavior.

>The governments (local and fed) learned their lessons by the screw ups
>during Katrina and got on this one in a quicker and more organized
>fashion.

Agreed, that was another factor! (Warning - your posts will now be considered BS by people who can only see race as the cause for everything.)

Some other factors -

All of New Orleans was under water because the levees failed. Most of the levees along the Mississippi held.

A Class 5 hurricane prevented aid from getting to NOLA. High water doesn't prevent aid from getting to the Midwest.

1800 people died in Katrina due to the flooding. 26 died in the Midwest floods. So the scale was a bit different.

Iowans had about a week of warning that the floods were certainly coming. New Orleaners had 3 days of warnings that the hurricane _might_ hit them.

Iowa activated their emergency plans. NO did not.

1,000,000 people displaced, never knowing if their city will ever drain, or if they are going to get help, and not knowing if they will have a place to work again either. The disparity of losing everything combined with the anger and frustration of everything else related to the dumb politics around it .....well, the mind can only take so much. I can't even imagine what it was like and I've heard stories directly from my friends brother who was in the Superdome during the storm. I can see how mob mentality set in rather quick; not sure how anyone who wasn't there can sit back and judge them. It's much better to sit back and be righteous on the Internet about how much better you are.

Cedar Rapids is at best 100,000 people and not all of them are displaced. Plus they only had the flood to deal with, not Cat 5 winds that level your entire region. The POTUS was on site shortly after and ordered troops onsite the next day. The police never left the Cedar Rapids area either, maintaining a level of security during the entire flood.

Clearly the evacuation plans in NO would have prevented the destruction of the city. The tragedy came after the storm, not before hand.

So were you there or not?

I wasn't there, nor am I judging anyone that reacted to the situation they were in either. I had and still do have a high level of compassion and sympathy for them.

If we not judge that behavior... then we should let the vicitms of the looted stores, the ones raped in the Super Dome, and the surviving family members of those killed by the mobbers to judge that behavior. There were people effect by the storm and by the inexcusable behavior. I wonder what someone who was effected by Katrina's fury AND by the rape and looting would say.... food for thought. Blue ones!
