As a concerned citizen of Planet Earth, I demand that the LHC begin operations as soon as possible, at as high energies as possible, and continue operating until such time as it is proven completely safe to turn it off. Given our present state of knowledge, we simply cannot exclude the possibility that aliens will visit the Earth next year, and, on finding that we have not yet produced a Higgs boson, find us laughably primitive and enslave us. Or that a wormhole mouth or a chunk of antimatter will be discovered on a collision course with Earth, which can only be neutralized or deflected using new knowledge gleaned from the LHC. Yes, admittedly, the probabilities of these events might be vanishingly small, but the fact remains that they have not been conclusively ruled out. And that being the case, the Precautionary Principle dictates taking the only safe course of action: namely, turning the LHC on as soon as possible. After all, the fate of the planet might conceivably depend on it. .jim"Don't touch my fucking Easter eggs, I'll be back monday." ~JTFC
jtval 0 #28 February 16, 2009 How did you guys let this one slip away? I mean one malfunction and everyone let's off the doomsday premise? It's coming back around. Where all my doomsday theorists at? Surely, this thread has more entertainment value left.My photos My Videos

With this new delay, Bill Cole's asteroid is going to beat the LHC as the cause of the end of the world. He wins.
jtval 0 #30 February 16, 2009 The asteriod is great news because that means the terrorists lose, too. They won't get to destroy the planet by picking fights with nuclear armed countries So we can stop bickering about this tiny war. In another unrelated thread someone mentioned that killing a few billion people would stop global warming. So either of these theories is actually a good one, right? Meteor will kill a few billion people War will do the same. A giant black hole will do at least that damage. =Global warming problem solved! I say spin that puppy up.My photos My Videos
