The average level of American education is so screwed up it's not even funny, true enough. I think the answer to that is enforcing standards in the lower levels of education.

You're from Ireland, I take it? Different scale, culture, economy, and etc altogether. Can't argue that the Irish Miracle did occur.

:)

Not ridiculous at all - schools are funded by property taxes. A higher density of property (cities) equates to more funds available to the school system.

i understand the concept its still ridicolous i dont see a reason why the taxes cant be collected nationally and equally spread amongst the population, just because someone is from a city does not entitle them to a better education. but then i dont fully understand the difference between federal and state taxes so im sure the reason its not done like that is in there somewhere

this is definitely off topic so i wont post in this thread again

Huh?

A better approximation than property density for amount of local funding for the school system would be:

average_property_value * number_of_properties_in_district * tax_rate

High property density can be high income housing or low income housing. The property taxes would be different, even if the property density were similar.

My explanation was easier to understand for someone who knows nothing about US taxes or how the school systems are funded.

Your explanation is also inapplicable, and isn't a driving factor regarding district funding.

I keep forgetting to tag "all else being equal" on the end of my simple explanations.

Of course, most people are well-aware that a building with a higher appraised value will bring in more in tax dollars than a lower-appraised building.

Congrats to all who wanted it. Clicky

Yes, LouDiamond that does include you. I don't appreciate the insulting insinuation I ever wrote anything bad in here about people that work for me, but I know you wanted this and am happy for you. I'm sad for my country because I don't think we can fucking afford it. But I don't think we can afford a lot of things right now that we're funding, and this will probably pale in cost compared to what we'll spend on future gov't health care programs that will be coming our way soon in all likelihood.

Anyway, if anybody wanted this, then I'm glad for you. For the country - no. Maybe I should go get another BS...I've always wanted to study mathematics a bit more in depth.

Well it looks like quite a few other people at the decision level felt this was a good thing for the troops and I agree. The force as a whole has been pushed hard and more has been asked of this generation of soldiers than in the past. As such, it's only right that they/we are taken care of. What does surprise me is that it passed without changes.

You're welcome to...I encourage it in fact. I like what I do and am fairly well paid (though not as much as I'd make elsewhere).

A word of caution, before you embark on that rewarding journey. If you cannot face facts (such as the fact that some rates/MOSs receive more training than others), believe that expending government funds without oversight is a good thing, believe that investing government $$ without a direct return on investment is a good thing, cannot make the correct decision when you know it will be unpopular, and subordinate the good of yourself and your followers to that of your country when necessary, it will be a very tough and likely unsuccessful road for you to follow. It will be tough anyway.

Hope you do, however. Let me know if I can help.
