DJL 235 #1 June 19, 2008 It would be the end of the crisis and if prices were low enough we could get right back to fucking up the environment with gas guzzlers. millertime24 8 #4 June 19, 2008 Thats no bullshit either. My friends used to light each others farts when we would get to drinking and it really really works. It would be awesome if you could eat a bean and beef burrito and fuel your car for a week. Muff #5048
VTmotoMike08 0 #5 June 19, 2008 Yes, I agree that it would be wonderful if something could crap out crude oil. If we could find a way to make a mini home refinery, I could put this tank o' bugs in my garage, take the crude and stuff it in my mini refinery and make my own gas on the spot, small scale. Now that would be cool. So it takes 40 SF of space, and not everyone has that, in another year it bet it will be down to 10SF. So much to think about and a lot more issues to be addressed. Unfortunatly, I give it 6 months until Exxon buys the patent and we never see it again
pirana 0 #6 June 19, 2008 So they've changed emphasis from plants to single-celled critters. Last I read about this it was expected that by 2015 we would have plants engineered to produce oil. And I don't mean ethanol refined from corn, i mean plants that produce oil. IIRC, it was a combination of genetic engineering and nanotechnology. Skip that whole Carboniferous period and go directly from living plants to oil." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
billvon 3,107 #7 June 19, 2008 >If we could find a way to make a mini home refinery . . . You can do that today with: biodiesel (waste oil to biodiesel converter) natural gas (make it with a digester or just pump it out of your natural gas line) ethanol (a still is pretty easy to make and there are centuries of experience with them) But gas would have to be astronomically high before people are willing to do stuff like that. I got 4 speghetti jars full of top quality cooking grease, but no one to give it to. Would be silly to drive it somewhere just so it can be made into a couple liters of fuel.
