Rookie120 0 #1 June 18, 2008 QuoteUrgent: House Democrats call for nationalization of refineries Per Pergram-Capitol Hill House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live. Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply. They also reasserted that the reason the Appropriations Committee markup (where the vote on the amendment to lift the ban) was cancelled so they could focus on preparing the supplemental Iraq spending bill for tomorrow. At an off-camera briefing, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said the same. And a senior Republican House Appropriations Committee aide adds that "there were multiple reasons for the postponement" including discussion on the supplemental. But the aide said there was the thought that Democrats may wish to avoid a debate today on energy amendments. Here are the highlights from briefing Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), member of the House Appropriations Committee and one of the most-ardent opponents of off-shore drilling I could not believe I heard I think it was Emanuel from IL say he thinks the Govt should take over refinerys! Who the hell does he think he is? Chavez? This is the Govt overstepping their bounds! If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
mnealtx 0 #2 June 18, 2008 Waters has been advocating this at least since the meetings with the oil execs. Insane idea, IMO.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706

lawrocket 3 #4 June 19, 2008 QuoteAmong other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply. Oh. That makes sense. Refineries don't control the flow of the oil supply - they do, to some extent, control the supply of what the oil is refined INTO. I can see it now. Take control of ADM and MCP to better control the amount of corn that is grown. Or take control of the pharmaceutical companies, thus to help control the prevalence of heart disease. My wife is hotter than your wife.

kelpdiver 2 #6 June 19, 2008 Waters is not party leadership, or remotely close. She represents the poorer part of LA, her resulting politics should be no surprise. It's a very cushy district - she's been spewing garbage since I was a freshman at Cal nearly two decades ago (I recall her saying blacks joined gangs due to their tribal past in Africa...no explanation for every other ethnic gang). So far it still looks like scare mongering.

The commentary in the OP's quotation is w/r/t more recent Congressional activity. VR/Marg Act as if everything you do matters, while laughing at yourself for thinking anything you do matters. So far it still looks like scare mongering. Rep. Waters has been in the US Congress since 1991 and is on the Advisory Board of Progressive Democrats of America. She also holds positions on the Committee on the Judiciary and its Subcommittees on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, and on Immigration, Border Security and Claims. Just because she's not at the level of Speaker Pelosi, doesn't mean she doesn't hold insight to the liberal arm of the party (which is in line with Speaker Pelosi anyway). Either way, it still does not change what she said, and it's without a doubt clear what she would love to do.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Doesn't mean they'll ever happen. Just like with the Republicans that would like to take away women's right to vote or have abortions while they fuck other men in the bathroom. You can spend time getting alarmed about her, but you really have better uses for your time.

What she wants is the opportunity to be on CSPAN lambasting those evil oil man. She shows that to her district, gets to keep living the good life, without the burden of actually accomplishing anything. She's no better than the Libertarians with inflexable unworkable platforms. Pelosi may share many liberal views, but she has worked on the basis of what can be done.

I expect the next layer of bureacracy will have something to do with lending and mortgages, given today's news about hundreds of indictments for mortgage fraud....
