base_nz 0 #26 June 10, 2008 Quoteunderfunded? $10 trillion for War on Poverty programs since 1965? What causes the poverty? If $10 trillion can't solve it, it's pretty clear that the "poverty" is not caused by lack of funding, right? I guess it all depends if you spend the money wisely or not.....10 trillion dollars and the poor ant get free medical??????...Can in nz, aus, uk, ect ect I think a while ago in america money became king and yes..... The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer... I guess another way of looking at it is, How do you become wealthy? and work back from there......And you thought Kiwis couldn't fly!!!! rynodigsmusic 0 #27 June 10, 2008 I think our society influences us. Movies, Music, Video games, ect... Whether or not it is influencing in a good way or a bad way relflects the direction of our commuinities. For us to take back the good in our generation, we have to confront the trash that the generations before us left. Unfortunately, it seems this is the very problem of every generation. What is clear is that we are being exploited for money, power, and fame. Gene03 0 #31 June 10, 2008 QuoteThis is sort of on the coat-tails of the Heller v. DC thread. There was a reference about high-crime rates etc. However, whenever someone brings that stuff up, I think about all these programs which were supposed to end poverty, poor medical care, the "great society" of President Johnson... None of these goals have been achieved, yet somehow, with a track record of near 0%, people still advocate more "government" solutions. Jesus H. Christ, Max. airdvr 210 #36 June 10, 2008 When the government started passing out $$ to poor people everywhere they were telling them in effect "it's OK, we'll take care of you." Fast forward. I see folks saying don't have kids you can't afford. Hehe...this system encourages having kids you can't afford. I worked in a car dealership in the inner-city back in the '90s. Regularly we would have people come in and try to finance a car who were receiving SSI or some other stipend. I can't tell you haw many times someone said they have "guaranteed income". Actually had a preganant woman tell me she was expecting a "raise".Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

So if I give you free beans and rice, are you going to think to yourself, "Now, I can get off of my ass and get a job." or are you going to think, "Look, free food."? Royd 0 #39 June 10, 2008 QuoteProblems in inner cities are caused by cities allowing low income areas to enlarge to a point that is not manageable by social programs. The only way to reduce crime and area-wide collapse is to disperse low income housing and revitalize problem areas. That is easily said.Which is easier, to bend over and pick up some trash, or steal a can of spray paint and spray graffiti on everything?
pirana 0 #40 June 10, 2008 Humans don't do well above a certain density level. Just llike any other animal, we self-destroy under a population surge. Instead of marching into the sea, humans simply rob and kill each other, eat at shitty chain restaurants, and watch lots of TV. I spent a few days last week in Chicago, my old hometown. Can't believe I used to live like that. Peace and quiet does not exist there. There is very little open space; certainly not nearly enough for the mass of humanity living around it. There is constant noise, lots of it, all day, and all night. Seems like about 20 to 25% of space is devoted to motorized traffic. Most of the rest is either a structure or is paved. Service everywhere sucks. The most common emotion is a listless form of crabiness. SERVICE: We're not happy until you're not happy. If I had to live like a rat in a cage, I'd act that way too." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
