JohnRich 4 #51 June 20, 2008 QuoteOrange County, CA is in a position where the board of supervisors will appoint our next sheriff. Our interim Sheriff, Jack Anderson... he is the only candidate who supports continuing to arm responsible citizens who go through extensive training and background checks. Your fears are coming true: New Orange County sheriff to review concealed-weapons permits"Newly appointed Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens said Tuesday that she intends to review all the concealed-weapons permits that her indicted predecessor issued and revoke those of gun owners who can't prove a legal need to carry the weapons. "Hutchens said she intends to review each permit and determine whether the gun owners demonstrated an immediate fear for their safety or held an occupation so inherently dangerous that they needed to carry concealed weapons in public. "The important thing to me is they need to have demonstrated a need," Hutchens said. And if there's no need, she'll revoke the permits. "That's probably not going to be popular with a lot of people," she said..."Source: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-gunpermits18-2008jun18,0,5805212.story So, little girl, can you prove to her that you "need" a concealed handgun to protect yourself? If you carry jewels, they're worth protecting with deadly force. But you can't have a gun just to protect your life - that's not as valuable as jewels. Move to Texas where these namby-pamby liberal assholes can't take away your right to carry a gun. edited by request of subject

JohnRich 4 #54 November 13, 2008 Update:Sheriff tries to limit concealed weapon permits Orange County's new sheriff is cracking down on concealed weapon permits, leaving some gun owners in a huff. Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has ordered a review of the 1,100 permits issued under her predecessor Michael Corona, and 422 permit holders have gotten letters saying the licenses will be revoked...Source: Mercury News This is why the issuance of concealed handgun permits should not be left up to the discretion of the Sheriff. This allows anti-gun sheriffs to deny law-abiding people their rights, and it creates different rights for people based upon where they happen to live. There should instead be objective qualifications under state law, and if you meet those qualifications, you should get the license - and no sheriff should be allowed to deny your permit. This sheriff has decided that people who need to protect their jewelry store assets deserve to be armed, but the average run of the mill citizen who merely wants to protect his life, is not as worthy as a bunch of jewelry. Nightingale 0 #55 November 13, 2008 Even permits issued for business reasons are in jeopardy. Unlike our last two sheriffs, the new sheriff refuses to issue a public standard for her CCW policy, so as far as anyone can tell, who gets a permit and who doesn't is completely arbitrary, and who gets revoked and who doesn't is also completely arbitrary. People have invested a lot of time and money in required training and haven't done anything to justify having their permits pulled by the department, and it's quite probable that her current actions may be illegal under state law (the law lists several reasons why a permit may be pulled, and "because I changed my mind" isn't one of them!). She has a duty to honor the legally issued licenses granted by her predecessors.

She has a duty to honor the legally issued licenses granted by her predecessors. She's sent out "intent to revoke" letters giving people 30 days to come up with a better reason to keep their CCW, but, of course, since she hasn't disclosed her issuance policy, nobody has any idea what kind of information to give her. However, since she hasn't officially revoked anybody yet, just stated her intentions to revoke, nobody has standing to file a lawsuit...yet. There are over 1000 permits in OC. She's sent out intent to revoke letters to a little less than half.
JohnRich 4 #58 November 20, 2008 News:Supervisors criticize sheriff over weapons permits County supervisors, Sheriff Sandra Hutchens and hundreds of gun activists engaged Tuesday in a Wild West-style shootout over restrictive concealed gun policies Hutchens has introduced during her first six months in office. After hearing more than 80 speakers present compelling stories of threats and safety concerns, supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution calling on Hutchens to ease her review of concealed weapons permits and broaden the reasons why a member of the public could carry a concealed handgun...Source: OC Register
Nightingale 0 #59 November 21, 2008 She got quite the smackdown... it was a wonderful sight to see. Over 250 people took the day off on a Tuesday to come down and let the Board of Supervisors know what an important issue this is to the people of Orange County, and over 80 of them stood up to publically address the Board. Everyone was polite, well dressed, and well spoken. If anyone wants to see the meeting, it's on the board's website. http://egov.ocgov.com/portal/site/ocgov/menuitem.60dd148ab86dc8d8ba092f59900016a0/?vgnextoid=2e8aea093e054110VgnVCM1000000100007fRCRD&vgnextfmt=default The sheriff's presentation is in the morning session, about an hour and a half in. There's about three comments at the end of the morning, and the bulk of the comments are in the afternoon.
