What did Michelle Obama Actually Say?

And of course we all know that MSNBC, NBC, NPR, MoveOn.org and the DailyKos are never guilty of this exact tactic (if it is really true).

I can think of of occasions when FOX promoted a bogus story (the story about the Cintons stealing everything that wasn't bolted down on Air Force One comes to mind). I can't think of any times when NPR (or even NBC) did the same. Would you care to provide examples?

Well, this got a little more interesting and those of you that follow my posts understand that the last thing I want is to be caught up in spin one way or another. I can admit when I'm wrong or, in this case, when not all the information has been given.

Michelle did say what she was attributed on Wikipedia:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGjR81pFJI4

So it looks like she did say it first without the "really" and only subsequently amended the statement to sound "more patriotic".

I still don't understand why there was a need to alter the subsequent tape rather than just play the original though.

I dont go to youtube much so, can you tell who posted it?

That may give some insite as to motive.

Just a thought

It's kind of impossible to determine who did the original editing.

The link I gave for the doctored tape was:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYY73RO_egw

There's no name attached but then again, there's no guarantee this is not just a copy from someone else who did the modification.

I have to be honest here. If Barak had said those words, I would definitely have an issue with it. However, I can live with the fact that his wife said it. She's not going to be president.

No, she is not running but, she has inserted herself into the campain with her comments and campaining. She (as anyone this close would be) is a direct reflection of who HE is and by supporting him publicaly, is now fair game.

if we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

I don't know of any NPR examples, we all know of CBS and the fake documents that lost Rather his job.

NBC (pretty sure it was on Dateline) got caught with their pants down when they orchestrated explosions of GM pick-ups during a safety investigation into the "side-saddle" fuel tank design.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

I hadn't heard that about NBC, though I can't say I'm surprised at the possibility.

NPR has always seemed to me to be pretty ethical in that respect (and others). IMO there is a lot to be said for non-corporate owned media.

There's more to be said for station / program managers that are apolitical....admittedly, a VERY rare breed.

For local news, that's true, but I was thinking more along the lines of world and international news.

Either way, if Sen. Obama is getting this butt-hurt over scrutiny that's being applied to his wife, who is campaigning for him, then how is he going to handle the general election if he gets the nomination? The kitchen gets hot...especially in US politics.

This is something I genuinely don't understand about American politics - why do comments by the wife even matter? She isn't the one standing for election, she won't be sworn into office, and she won't have any real political power. Anything that happens under a given president is the president's responsibility and the buck will stop with him. So why even care about what the wife says?

Just from observation, Michelle Obama is an angry human being. She has had oportunities, by whatever means, that few of us can afford or even have the door opened to us. Yet, she walks around with a scowl on her face.
Do you believe that Balack is not aware of his wife's bitterness, albiet, unfounded.
Once you stand up in a public forum and make some of the statements which she has, you have entered the game, and can expect all kinds of scrutiny.

Every candidate has fired people from their staff for making less hostile statements.

What pisses me off about Obama is that he thinks all he has to say about any particular topic that it's off limits, and we are supposed to give him a free pass. That seems to happen anytime something comes up that puts him on pins and needles.

Do you not agree that much can be determined about someone by observing who they hang out with? Wives and pastors would be prime examples.

Does that mean if Michelle is caught smoking dope, we should check whether she inhales?

From my observations, the American primaries involve simply throwing as much mud at the opponent as possible, and then wait to see how much of it sticks.

Well, in reality the first lady ends up being an ambassador of sorts. Maybe not so much if she'd be more behind the scenes kind of FL, but you know with her education and experience, she'll want to play a more active role.

That said, it doesn't matter whether or not she said 'really'. This is campaign language used for pandering. She's never been proud of her country before? Doubt it. It's more an example of today's "ha gotcha!" media culture than her patriotism or lack thereof.

I realise that, but ultimately anything she does or doesn't do as First Lady will be signed off for by the (duly elected) President. Just seems to me that anyone pointing at the wife of a given candidate is simply playing a game of misdirection.

(And I agree with your second paragraph).

If that's the case, and I'm inclined to agree that it is, what she should do is admit that she misspoke. Because the literal meaning of what she said is that she has never been proud of her country before.

I have been proud of my country for most of my life.

Recently I have found myself being ashamed of what is being done to my country and how it is viewed in the world.

I would prefer my country to be viewed by the world as THE example of how it can indeed be the world leader without the need to threaten and attack other countires due to the greed of a few.

Don't forget to vote for the new Messiah. He's offering Hope and Change. Whatever the hell that means.
