Birth defects – should taxpayers subsidize consequences of FLDS practice of first-cousin marriages?

Good job. Now the poor guy gets the money, which probably would have been his anyway if the rich guy hadn't shut down the factory and shipped it to China. And the rich guy gets to report the loss on his taxes which may be just enough to knock his liability down below zero percent. And if his accountant is any good, he'll get him a government subsidy to not only replace the wallet and the cash (including potential earnings on that money) but also an all expense paid trip on a government plane so that he can shop for the replacement. But not to worry. This is all possible of course because of the rider on the omnibus spending bill under the title of "interim relief stimulus for freedom, patriotism, honor and fairness".

Is it a good cause to bail people out from their own harmful behaviors resulting from their irrational beliefs in invisible supernatural beings?

No more of a good idea than to bail people out from their own harmful behaviors. Period. End of story.

Again, Professor, you are amazing me with your personal responsibility, no government bailout statements of late. :)

In fact, ANYONE who pays taxes cares under your system.

Congrats!!!!!!! That is the point!!!!!!!!;);););)

Cool! So those of us that pay more in taxes therefore care more than people who pay less in taxes. :)
I'd think that I pay more in taxes than probably 95 percent of the US. Thus, I am in the top percentile.

That'll be a cool sig line.

And to think how much more wisely your money could be spent, and how many more people in need it would affect, if universal healthcare was a reality! Now we might be getting to a point to where I can introduce my idea for universal education! Just imagine what could be done with more people with better education!!!!!!!!!B|B|B|B|

You might even be called a hero!;):):D:D:D:D

When was my last "bailout" post suggesting people should NOT take responsibilty for their own bad behavior, then?

Nominee for quote of the day (bolded portion below, rest included for context & relation to post):

“At the heart of the identity problem are the group's commitment to ‘celestial marriage’ — polygamy — and its custom of allowing first cousins to marry. ‘Your family tree shouldn't be a wreath,’ says Randy Mankin, editor of the El Dorado [Texas] Success newspaper, which unearthed the sect’s Utah roots four years ago, when its first members, posing as businessmen, arrived in Eldorado under the pretense of building a hunting and game preserve."

From an article in the 20 April 08 issue of Time magazine, “Tracing the Polygamists' Family Tree” that discusses the incidence of fumarase deficiency in the Arizona FLDS,the Utah FLDS communities, and speculation of incidence in the children of the west Texas FLDS community and the FLDS approach the public subsidies:

“Families whose children are affected often avail themselves of state-funded medical care, consistent with the FLDS philosophy of seeking government aid — despite their suspicion of government — which they call ‘bleeding the Beast.’”

“The FLDS community, by and large, rejects the idea that Fumarase Deficiency is caused by genes, according to [Dr.] Tarby [the neurological pediatrician who first identified the birth defect in the Arizona FLDS community –nerdgirl]. ‘They have their mythology about the condition. They think it’s something in the water, or something in the air,’ he says.”

You do know that ditches today are dug via mechanized equipment that require skilled operators and people who will follow guidelines like co-ordinating with utility companies to prevent cutting underground power, water, phone, and cable lines. There also have to be skilled workers to maintain the equipment..

Shovels and picks are soooo third world ( pun intended)

A salesman from KFC walked up to the Pope and offers him a million dollars if he would change "The Lord's Prayer" from "give us this day our daily bread" to "give us this day our daily chicken." The Pope refused his offer.

Two weeks later, the man offered the pope 10 million dollars to change it from "give us this day our daily bread" to "give us this day our daily chicken" and again the Pope refused the man's generous offer. Another week later, the man offered the Pope 20 million dollars and finally the Pope accepted. The following day, the Pope said to all his officials, "I have some good news and some bad news. 'The good news is, that we have just received a check for 20 million dollars. The bad news is, we lost the Wonder Bread account!'''

Ross LeBaron's sons have stepped forward with DNA evidence that their father has fathered four children with their sister, and it is believed/purported that one of their brothers fathered the sister's fifth child.
Local news interviewed 3 of the brothers about why their father is having sex with the sisters.
Father wouldn't comment on television of course, but their eldest brother talked about "inter-sexual relations for purifying the seed is beneficial to select families and situations. However, it is a private matter." :S
