SkyPiggie 0 #1 April 4, 2008 News:Mexico reconquers California? Absolut drinks to that! The latest advertising campaign in Mexico from Swedish vodka maker Absolut promises to push all the right buttons south of the U.S. border, but it could ruffle a few feathers in El Norte. The billboard and press campaign, now running in Mexico, is a colorful map depicting what the Americas might look like in an "Absolut" -- i.e., perfect -- world. The U.S.-Mexico border lies where it was before the Mexican-American war of 1848 when California, as we now know it, was Mexican territory and known as Alta California... Full story, with picture of map: L.A. Times I will not be purchasing any Absolut vodka in the future. Maybe Sweden should disband and return their land to Prussia. lawrocket 3 #8 April 4, 2008 I agree. This should be humorous. But then I've got to think to myself the following: "Damn, that's a much longer border to have to defend." "Damn. It's not like LA water isn't bad enough." "Damn. Portland as the new Tijuana. Okay, there's one improvement." "Damn. if we thought Sonora and Chihuahua were Third World now, wait till they become the new Zacatecas!" "Damn! There isn't enough farmland in Washington and Idaho for the undocumented. Where will they work?" My wife is hotter than your wife.
Andrewwhyte 1 #9 April 4, 2008 Everything north of the Columbia belonged to the Hudson's Bay company and was British North America, so Portland would be the new Bellingham.

SkyPiggie 0 #12 April 5, 2008 QuoteIT IS A JOKE MORONS! So it would be okay for Absolut to market some product to Islamic nations by showing a map of the Middle East with Israel merged with Syria? How about Taiwan belonging to China? South Korea belonging to North Korea? Pakistan belonging to India? The Falklands belonging to Argentina? It doesn't seem like a very good marketing strategy to me. They may gain some customers, but they'll lose just as many, if not more. They should be able to find ways to appeal to one audience, without using nationalism which disenfranchises another. It's dumb. I hope their U.S. sales plummet. SkyPiggie 0 #15 April 7, 2008 They've come to their senses! News:Absolut apologizes for Mexican vodka ad The Absolut vodka company apologized Saturday for an ad campaign depicting the southwestern U.S. as part of Mexico amid angry calls for a boycott by U.S. consumers... "In no way was it meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues," Absolut said...Source: L.A. Times Probably too late to prevent a lot of damage to their U.S. sales. But they need to be taught a lesson not to delve into anti-American politics if they want to sell their vodka in our market. They deserve to be taught this lesson.

SkyPiggie 0 #18 April 7, 2008 QuoteAnother victory for political correctness. NEVER OFFEND ANYONE EVER!!! They're welcome to offend anyone they want. They're also welcome to suffer the consequences from that offense. Those two things go together. If you think one can offend a large number of people, and escape from all consequences from that action, then you have unrealistic expectations. As a business trying to sell a product, they should try not to offend large quantities of their customers, like 300 million Americans. They made a bad business choice, and now they're correcting it. It's not about political correctness, it's about business.
rehmwa 2 #19 April 7, 2008 QuoteAnother victory for political correctness. NEVER OFFEND ANYONE EVER!!! see, I thought the "politically correct" position was the original one the vodka company put out - you know, 'down with conquerors, give all the land back to whoever owned it 357 years earlier, but no earlier, but no later either' ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

Well Molson Canadian Beer ads have been making fun of Americans for years. The Molson-Coors merger has not lead to an abatement of the ridicule, so add Coors to your boycott list; unpatriotic bastards! Come to think of it aren't they in bed with Miller? Stop buying that too.

georgerussia 0 #25 April 7, 2008 QuoteAnother victory for political correctness. NEVER OFFEND ANYONE EVER!!! It is common business sense, not a political correctness. Business do not run their ads (and pay a fortune for that) to make political statements - they do it to make money. And yes, this works - the main reason I did not become (and will never be) Vonage customer is because of their crappy ads.* Don't pray for me if you wanna help - just send me a check. *
