Is McCain fit to be President?

Recommended Posts

Combine McCain's muddle-headed confusion about Shiite vs. Sunni Muslims, with his chumminess with Armageddon death cult fundamentalists (Hagee), and I'm starting to fear a McCain presidency more & more.

Right now, I have no idea which way I'm gonna go. This election is a true case of having to vote for the least revolting nominee. [:/]

Isn't that typically the case? I can think of a few DZ.commers that I would much rather see in the White House than any of the three that have a reasonable chance of winning in November.

What constitutes politics nowadays?

Take a miniscule piece of a person's life and explode it as an indication that that's the way the person is.

One thing about John McCain - NOBODY knows what the fucking guy is thinking. He is yet another who has never floated trial balloons.

The best example of McCain is the fear that Dole's campaigners had of him. Dole immensely respected McCain because of McCain's honesty. But McCain thinks for himself and is not a dogmatic guy. It's why the Limbaughs don't like him - because he toes no line for anybody.

Is he fit? Absolutely. He's the sort of guy who I think would have no problem pissing off anyone. In other words, a guy who will say, "No."

Imo, yes.

(Doesn't mean I concur w/ or am non-concur w/any/all/some/none of his positions. It is my opinion w/r/t "fitness" for office of Executive.)

> Imo, yes.

Agreed. The only minor issue is the "natural born citizen" constitutional provision for presidential eligibility - but I am pretty confident that the courts will determine that he meets that requirement. The other "fitness" questions - his age, his seeming memory loss on issues like the USSR and the Sunni vs Shia issue - are issues for the voters to decide.

You can write-me-in in November if you really want to...;)

Sen. McCain doesn't light my fire so much either, but I am so fundamentally opposed to the politics of Sens. Obama and Clinton....[:/]

Same here.

As I tremble typing this, I will admit that I believe Clinton would make a better president than Obama. He may talk a good talk, but the experience is just not there. It's like promoting the janitor to CEO.:S

CLinton made a good president - a governor from Arkansas with no national legislative or executive experience.

Reagan made a good president - a governor from California with no national legislative or executive experience.

From Reagan's Second debate:
Quote

REPORTER: Mr. President, I want to raise an issue that I think has been lurking out there for two or three weeks, and cast it specifically in national security terms. You already are the oldest President in history, and some of your staff say you were tired after your most recent encounter with Mr. Mondale. I recall, yes, that President Kennedy, who had to go for days on end with very little sleep during the Cuba missile crisis. Is there any doubt in your mind that you would be able to function in such circumstances?

REAGAN: Not at all, Mr. Trewhitt and I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.

An all-time classic! And note that "youth and inexperience" meant 56 years old and four years as Vice President. That's "spin." But Reagan was funny with his.:D

I love it!!!:)
I do remember that debate very well, but thanks Jerry for posting it. It truly was a classic.

BTW: That was the first presidential election that I was old enough to vote in. The choice was quite easy and my pick won 49 states.B|

McCain is a true American hero. Read some books about him and his trials as a POW. He has balls the size of anyone in this country, and thats what we need. He has experience of many years of serving this country unlike our past two presidents, a draft dodger and a cheerleader. This may well be the last President we will have who comes to power with the experience of combat in his background. How many up and coming politicians today have been in the military? He is afraid of nothing, has a mind of his own and will restore our country when elected.

I'm with you. I like presidents who have been fighter pilots. I just hope he will keep congress from raising taxes, make them balance the budget, build the fence, shrink the Fed gov, start with some kind of fix for Social Security, start a re-re-education campaign to teach our young Americans that the government is not the answer to ANY problem, and pass the FairTax. Tall order, huh.

Any of these guys, and any of us, can mis-speak or buffoon a few words. But, I do think Hagee would make a great running mate.

Are you in favor of reducing Social Security benefits?

The benefit as it is now cannot be sustained. The program was never meant as a retirement program, it was meant to be a supplement only.

Social Security will be insolvent by 2015.

True. Of course, right now, a small tax increase could change that.

Also true. However, only 20 percent of elderly households rely solely on Social Security for their income. Unfortunately, only about 36 percent of elderly Americans receive less than 50 percent of their income from Social Security.

Not true. SS taxes are anticipated to be exceeded by SS benefits in 2017. Best estimates suggest that in 2041, 100 percent of currently scheduled benefits will no longer be payable due to trust fund exhaustion, and benefits will be reduced to 75 percent.

The fact remains that current benefits are not sustainable at current tax rates, and the longer we wait to address the issue, the greater the cost to fix it.

Something has to be done. It's simple math, and it will take more than a "small" tax increase. Honestly, even after all the money I've paid into the greatest ponzi scheme of all time, I'd give mine up if there were some assurance the program would be phased out.

Trouble is, no one on the hill is willing to take the issue on. When it runs into a brick wall, the fecal heads will just point backwards and say "they should have done something." President Bush tried to get Congress moving on this one.

Let me save Kallend some trouble. Bush is a liar! That lying liar. And the lies he tells!

Of course, your country would have far more money to spend on it's citizens health and social issues (and pay off it's massive debt) if it didn't waste so much sticking it's nose where it doesn't belong, in other people countries.

I'm in agreement. One generation or another is going to have to step up and take it on the chin.
It wouldn't hurt my feelings if it happened today. I just don't want to pay in for another ten to fifteen years, and be told, "Sorry."

The mathematics is relatively simple, but if we take action now, a small tax increase is all that is necessary. The longer we wait, the bigger the required tax increase will be.

Do you really believe Bush would sign a bill raising taxes? His method of operation has thus far been to cut taxes and increase government spending. I'm pretty sure simple maths is not one of his strengths.

Under the "current" conditions, correct. However, the Board of Trustees for SSI and Medicare just sounded another warning.

I was off by a couple years, once the baby-boomers are in full-swing retirement, SSI will begin negative flow as early as 2017.

This is why we (as a nation) should be kicking ourselves for at least not allowing a partial privatization of Social Security withholding. The return I could get, as an individual, by saving $50/month, for 30 years is so much better, it makes financial sense to abandon SSI completely.

Use any financial calculator, saving $50/month for a 20 year old, retiring at age 70. Using mutual fund tools, average rate of return ~8%. All without the government's help. Amazing. That's $400K in the bank. That doesn't account for inflation either.

Sh*t....with SSI's performance, crazy negative return and Medicare barely holding on, why would anyone want the government to handle healthcare?
