asmund 0 #26 March 23, 2008 Run the numbers... Assuming: Yaris $14,000 Prius $24,000 Yaris 40MPG Prius 50MPG Total cost to drive 100,000 miles with these two cars: Assuming Gas Price $3.50 Yaris $22,750 Prius $31,000 With all the above assumptions, you'll save money with the cheaper Yaris, with as much as $20/gallon gas price. (Break-Even-Point). ---- Changing the assumptions to more extreme: Same Price. Yaris MPG 38 Prius MPG 60 Gas price will need to become $10.30 before it is cheaper to buy and drive a Prius. Gas price really isn't the main factor when looking to save money on driving...its the initial purchase price of the vehicle that matters, combined with above average gas MPG.I like subway. shropshire 0 #27 March 23, 2008 The Hybrids are probably a move in the right direction, it's just that they aren't quite as efficient as advertised and cost loads more to buy in the first place. We clearly need to do something to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels .. we can't keep pumping that stuff out of the ground forever. (.)Y(.) Gawain 0 #34 March 23, 2008 Quoteresale value must be part of any 100k cost analysis. The prius will fetch more at that point. Also must include maintenance. Battery replacement costs are several thousand dollars, about the 8 year mark. I don't know if there is a mileage point. It also depends on the type of car and use per se. The argument can be made that a Dodge Ram 2500 with a Cummins Diesel will outlast them all by several hundred thousand miles with doing not much more than changing the oil. From BMWs perspective, I don't know about their diesel, but their gasoline counterparts here in the US require specific oil and maintenance. It doesn't need to be done often, but the reason why they include maintenance with many of their models is because you have to use their oil.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! kelpdiver 2 #36 March 23, 2008 Quotei think you also get a tax break when you buy a hybrid. The tax break is exhausted for the Prius. It is designed to jumpstart a new model release, but decreases to zero as sales increase.

So far they've had to replace fewer than a dozen batteries, and most of them had been physically abused (cooked in a paint curing oven, screws driven into them.) They are replaced less often than, say, manual transmissions. Taxi drivers have gotten 300,000 miles out of the battery.

Still, should the need arise, I understand that replacement is $3,000-4,000 (-ish).So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! rhys 0 #39 March 24, 2008 The prius is one of the first hybrid cars, they will only improve in time and money saving is not nessecarily the main objective these days.
