And if they did, I wonder if the powers that be would finally let us buy one.
kelpdiver 2 #3 March 18, 2008 I wish people would give more than just a url to a video and ask for comments. I can't look at this video for 6 hours. Guessing by the response that it is a new and better choice, so what? It's unrealistic to go from nothing to the ultimate answer. Those who buy and drive the Prius contribute to the knowledge for efficient hybrid technology. Those who buy the lexus models - maybe contribute less, since most of the tech is used for performance gains. (though at least one model, the fuel economy barely changes and the 0-60 decreases, making it seem really stupid)

quade 4 #5 March 18, 2008 QuoteSeems like Toyota has conned you. Mmmm . . . hold on there Tex. This quote from the article is significant; Quote The test had taken us along just over 200 miles of autoroute, about 200 miles of B roads, including winding ascents and descents in Switzerland, and 100 miles of urban driving. The Prius was designed for maximum efficiency in "City" type driving.; not Highway and, with 77hp, certainly not any sort of uphill grade. Do the test in and around Los Angeles during typical daytime traffic and the numbers will absolutely be significantly different.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Zarkon 0 #8 March 19, 2008 The Prius doesn't advertise 66mpg, at least here in the states. 48 city and 45 highway is what the sticker says. I just bought a 2008 Prius about a month and a half ago and I've been very happy with it. I'm averaging about 45 mpg or so and it's the middle of the winter here in Buffalo. Once warm weather comes around I'll be getting a little better millage, but compared to the 02 Chevy Monte SS(~20mpg) I traded in I'm quite pleased. asmund 0 #9 March 19, 2008 I've got the Yaris from Toyota, almost the same MPG, average 41-43MPG, but the car costs about half of the Prius, without too big difference in size of the car. My total cost for buying the car, and putting gas in it for 100,000 miles is less than the initial purchase cost of the Prius... :-)I like subway. Will it still hold true when gas goes to $4 a gal etc? I bought my Prius loaded(minus leather) so it was a bit pricier, but still under 30k...and my employer gives a 3,000 reimbursement for new hybrid purchases, so I had a couple reasons why I went with the Prius. Gawain 0 #21 March 22, 2008 QuoteI have a Diesel Beetle.... it averages about 46 MPG thru traffic and 52 MPG on the freeway doing 70 MPH..Good economy is still around if you look for it. The problem is that diesel has all but been regulated out of existence in the US. The only diesels available right now are SUVs and one car (Jeep Grand Cherokee, using the Mercedes 3.0L V6; the Volkswagen Touareg with a Diesel V10; the Mercedes GL and ML series and E-Series car). The Jeep and Volkswagen are 42 or 45 state cars. The Mercedes are finally 50 state cars. The least expensive of them all is the Jeep, but it's still $30K and it's not available in 8 states. The VW is a whopping $70K, the german products are between $50-70K+. I think diesel is a viable alternative, but not under the current conditions and not while the trucking and rail industries needs every drop of it. Also, since the US regs have forced such heavy regulations on it that only six-figure salaries can afford the things, it does nothing for the larger consumption and thus, emission picture. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! shropshire 0 #22 March 22, 2008 The thing about diesel engines is that they will run on bio fuels, like SVO (straight Vegie Oil)as well as fossils; with out modification (unless you are in a cold climate or have a shite fuel pump). The Prius is a good start but actually is not much cop' it only averages 45 m.p.g (imperial) which you can get out of a family diesel car for much cheaper to buy in the first place. They sell on Eco-nazi guilt trips not common sense. The next generation ones have just got to be a lot better or foregt them. (.)Y(.) He just told you that, no, diesel options available to Americans are not much cheaper in the first place. In fact, it's quite the opposite, and esp in the state (CA) that needs it the most. We can't have everyone switch from gas to diesel anyway. So we still need to bump the efficiency on gas driven cars. The Prius has been driving this improvement of late. None of the others were nearly as successful and now there is considerable advancement coming. That's only a positive.

asmund 0 #25 March 22, 2008 Hey, I get better MPG than the sticker because I drive like a grandma. The EPA changed their testing profile for 2008 MPG stickers, so all cars generally report a little less MPG for 2008, compared to earlier years. 2007 Yaris had sticker MPG of 40/34, and as I said, I'm getting 41-43, sometimes 44-45 and my record for one tank driving very carefully at 50mph the entire tank, with only three on-off-ramps highway, is personal record 47 MPG. I think gas prices will have to go pretty high before it becomes cheaper to buy a Prius, if all you care about is your total cost of A to B, riding in a new comfortable car.I like subway.
