ryoder 1,590 #3 March 11, 2008 But haven't you heard? A nation needs a mandatory pledge of allegiance, (recited under duress), else it might fall apart! Oh, sure, point out that the USA managed to survive over a hundred years w/o one, but that was just a fluke. You need to urge your gov't to mandate this ASAP! JackC 0 #5 March 11, 2008 I'm sick of these assholes trying to foist their half-baked bullshit on us. They've been doing it for years and all sides of the UK political coin are busy finding ways to legislate us into mindless automatons. It's time we had a new political party in the UK. We need to pull out of the EU and set our own laws. A common market yes, ruled by faceless bureaucrats in Brussels no. We need to repeal the Human Rights Act and stop the crippling PC movement from forcing us to swallow whole swathes of pointless laws. I think we need a government that will agree not to introduce loads of new laws, but instead spend their term weeding out all the bullshit ones the last lot have introduced. kelpdiver 2 #7 March 11, 2008 England has no national holiday? How many countries around the world have one for their independence from the Queen? Every nation should have one self centered day. You could give up one of the 4 banking holidays - how about Summer Bank Holiday (August 25th)?

kelpdiver 2 #17 March 11, 2008 QuoteWe can't take a day off, we're too busy working for the good of mankind! If only it were so. I know how many holidays you blokes take. Well, for Barclays it's 9 US versus 8 UK holidays, but the 3 random "Banking" days seem a bit silly. Hence, the suggestion to make one into England Day. Or Magna Carta Day. Of course, no one can compete with Japan's "Health-Sports Day" (Oct 13) or "Culture Day" (Nov 3, for a society that is as xenophobic as any). 17 days in total. DZJ 0 #19 March 11, 2008 To be honest I don't think most people would care too much about an English national day, and some of those who would make a big point of it would follow it up with some bollocks about 'England for the English'. As for Japan, they might as well have 'Anti-Godzilla Training and Preparation Day', for all the difference it would make to their over-work culture. It does make a difference - Americans work more hours than anyone, largely because of less vacation (and many don't even take that time) and for many companies, few acknowledged holidays. No President's Day, nor MLK, or Good Friday.

I'd be all for that in the US as well.. oh wait... have you seen the people that end up on juries??? hmm on third thought as long as the system is structured so that it is impossible for the politicians to do more than enforce some basic protections vs each other it might work, but I cant imagine how complex such a system would be to design and implement.____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
