When I was at Verizon, they were suing the cleaning company for extended phone calls made from conference rooms after hours to Gautemala and Honduras. They had video of the cleaning staff making 30 minute phone calls to family back home. The company was compensated for the money that they paid the people and the cost of the phone call. They put locks on the conference room doors. Then, they found a couple have sex behind the locked door. No Americans on the cleaning staff. Wait until they realize that it is cheaper to import doctors than to increase enrollment in US medical schools, or engineering schools... The cost of infrastructure can be reduced by not building any colleges. I'm going into the Global Warming awareness business. nerdgirl 0 #11 March 10, 2008 QuoteWait until they realize that it is cheaper to import doctors than to increase enrollment in US medical schools, or engineering schools.. One (additional) problem with that scenario – that’s been recognized for a while but very little is really being done – is that it becomes a real problem (heck, in some areas it *is* a real problem now) when you need folks who are able to get security clearances, especially for ‘pointy things w/fins’- & ‘shiny metal death’-related work or technical analysis in the intelligence community. ---- ---- ---- Related observation (to subject of thread): Headlines of this weekend’s Wall Street Journal, both ‘above the fold’: “Jobs Data Suggest U.S. Is in Recession” “More People Pushed Into Part-Time Work Force” /Marg Act as if everything you do matters, while laughing at yourself for thinking anything you do matters. I think that it would likely benefit our country to have our "best and brightest" in government service. When I know that people like nerdgirl work/have worked in the halls of our govt in some capacity, it gives me hope that there are others like her who know what's what. Granted, that hope is slashed as soon as CNN shows our fearless leader unable to open a locked door after a speech.... God knows having dumbasses in the government hasn't helped much. When I was at Verizon, they were suing the cleaning company for extended phone calls made from conference rooms after hours to Gautemala and Honduras. They had video of the cleaning staff making 30 minute phone calls to family back home. What!?! This huge money-making Verison went against those poor Gautemala and Honduras individuals who spent only 30 minutes talking to their dying moms? They probably think only rich should have the right to call their moms. What a greedy bastards! The only hope is when Hillary wins, the filthy rich people making more than 1K a month will have to pay a "rich tax", which would allow poor people to call whenever country they want. The company was compensated for the money that they paid the people and the cost of the phone call. They put locks on the conference room doors. nerdgirl 0 #17 March 11, 2008 QuoteI would submit that one of the hallmarks of a society in trouble is when their best and brightest are disproportionately assigned to non productive things such as "shiny metal death." I can see how that might appear callous. It’s something akin to the dark humor of skydivers use of phrases like “BSBD” and “bouncing” or climbers talking about “cratering.” Perhaps surprisingly … or perhaps not … I would not disagree with you *as you wrote it.* One can build cases from secular and religious ethics perspectives arguing against all involvement in any work related to nuclear weapons. From a realist perspective (i.e., Thucydides, Hobbes, Clausewitz, Scott Sagan), ‘shiny metal death’ and the power/realpolitik/deterrence they conveyed during the Cold War and continues today is “productive.” From a more pragmatic realist perspective, the case is the opposite of “disproportionately assigned,” rather knowledge and skills w/r/t nuclear physics, nuclear weapons modeling, and nuclear effects is dying, literally. It’s a rapidly aging workforce. One that can’t be replaced by foreign workers. If the ability to model nuclear weapons effects with any reasonable confidence is lost, there are forces within the USG (Depts of Energy & Defense, & other constituencies) that will push *hard* for resumption of nuclear testing. The Defense Science Board was tasked to review the issue last summer. The US Senate has not ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. I do not want to see any state test nuclear weapons. There's also a need for technically competent individuals who can challenge USG (& other states) nuclear policies. Folks like Jeff Lewis of Arms Control Wonk, Cornell’s George Lewis (no relation), Princeton’s Frank von Hippel, Richard Garwin (who will probably never die because he’s too stubborn), and UIUC’s Jeremiah Sullivan (also a JASON, i.e., w/highest security clearance). We lost Stanford’s Pief Panofsky last year. VR/Marg Act as if everything you do matters, while laughing at yourself for thinking anything you do matters. Andrewwhyte 1 #19 March 11, 2008 You are correct. However not everyone can be above average. If the best and brightest are concentrated on defense you are crowding out your capacity in (for example) medical research, or pollution abatement science, or agronomy. You can't keep a smart person doing a 'dumb' job for very long. They will quit when they can get a better one, then you have to go through the trouble to hire and train a new person. That's the benefit in going the other way.
