Mayor of French Village Bans Dying in Town Limits

Recommended Posts

Quote

the mayor of the southwestern village of Sarpourenx wrote in a decree that warned of "severe punishment" for offenders.

This is what gets me about government. Laws, etc.

Severe punishment? Apparently laws can do anything now. And when people keep dying despite the law, I wonder if there will be additional laws because this law isn't working.

Did you read the entire aricle?

This law is a protest by the Mayor becuase he wasn't allowed to expand the cemetary. The "severe punishment" consisted of "The first dead person to come along, I'll send him to the state's representative,"

From what I read the Mayor wasn't taking the law seriously. He is just wanting to expand the cemetary.

Yes, I read it. So the law is "symbolism over substance."

That should make anyone feel better, right? Hey, something ain't going right, just pass a law or issue an edict. That'll show 'em.

It makes you wonder what is the point of other laws, edicts, etc. Which ones are NOT the result of caprice?

This reminds me of Louis XIV's edict banning miracles.

Hey! Don't knock it. It was a very effective edict!>:(

he's copying a winning tactic it might actually have substantial results

Isn't that what the Bush Admin is doing? Just changing the rules to win?

Dunno. Does the French constitution forbid laws against dying in certain places?
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

It looks to me like the Mayor was frustrated because he couldn't expand the cemetary and was trying to make a point to the state. What do you think he should have done?

Something besides issuing oddball edicts?

They should amend the statute to include "if you die within town borders without a cemetary plot to put you in, we will expell your remains from the town borders via catapult"

I can see it now..."People die when the heart stops beating. We must stop the heart from stopping!!"
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

"Co-location". That is the key. You actually triple the occupancy. Problem solved.

Six feet down is just a guideline. Go down 4 ft. Drop them in and bury them.

A week later. Go 2 ft down, lay some sod.

Plus, the departed feel more appreciated when they have 3 times the visitors.

I am totally a solutions guy. :)

Eh, most people take themselves far too seriously. This guy, on the other hand, has a sense of humor. I say more power to him.

I can see it now..."People die when the heart stops beating. We must stop the heart from stopping!!"

Sounds like an argument for decent public healthcare...

And the same argument applies. "No matter what, people's hearts are eventually going to stop, no matter how good the healthcare. Because, people are designed with a limited life."

"Stop stopping hearts." IT cannot be done.

So you can see into the future?

It wouldn't be a good idea, but who's to say it will never be possible?

That's not "decent healthcare." That's called "science fiction that may become reality."

It certainly was, but it kind of seems like outlawing god to exist...

To the article: I love that guy. People on here just don't seem to have humor. It's probably the single most awesome response to a stupid decision of which I have ever heard.
