Catch the Newest Tabloid

Recommended Posts

The New York Times.

I'm not the hugest fan of Senator McCain, but after reading the article, I'm convinced the the New York Times has become a yellow-journalistic-tabloid.

What a waste of paper. No facts, or evidence. Hell, at least the Lewinsky deal had some physical evidence...

Look for much increasing negativity. Much, much, MUCH increasing negativity.

It's not like they can't look to McCain's past and find some tough things. He has admittedly had his lapses.

I'm no fan of McCain - not by a longshot. But this one - yeah. Until they can say more than, "Appearance of impropriety" then they should can it.

This is only the beginning.

It will be just as interesting to watch what is going to happen in the other party primary. Maybe more so.

What I think is funny is how this rag once lauded his "reaching across the aisle" etc...

In the end, I hope it helps him...

You know I was watching this thing come out on the news last night and everyone agreed that the Times is hitting an all new low, even Dems who have led panels investigating him agreed that whether or not they agree with his policy he is an honest, decent man. Nobody said "yeah we no he did it but we didn't have the evidence to prove it", everyone agreed that this is BS and McCain doesn't deserve this.

You know, Obama admitted to drug use in his book and it gets passing, but no big notice from the press.

When Bill Clinton denied he inhale they were all over him.

So now the NY Times throws out this story with no "facts" to back it up. Now McCain has to deny it. This denial will become the focus of the situation, not the original allegation (that so far has no clear cut evidence).

I'm not pro/con Obama, Clinton or McCain in these examples. I just want to point out that the way I see it, the press makes more money by creating controversy than reporting factual news.

No argument there, but the NYT has been losing subscribers and they just announced a workforce cut of about 100 (mostly through attrition).

All papers are losing subscribers and laying off people.

One of the casualties of the stupidity of all the states jumping to January/February is the exhaustion of story angles, particularly to covering the GOP side. The press would be much happier if it was an open race again. By May they'll really be digging into the bottom of the well.

Which I believe supports my point, that the press (US and worldwide) has gone from reporting the news to creating, or defining the news.

Do you believe that is the cause or the response to losing subscribers?

Papers are, and are going to be less significant than they used to. TV and the internet has stolen much of their audience and they are trying to find ways to remake themselves to get it back. Thus, they are acting more like those other two. And because the papers are cutting staff to reduce overhead, there are a lot fewer reporters to send about.

I'm curious as to what trends will develop once Rupert Murdoch is done re-molding the Wall Street Journal. Apparently he turned around one of the rags in the UK. A reset-purge-restart may yield a model for some of the other papers.
