CanuckInUSA 0 #1 February 21, 2008 Just thought I'd let some people who may not be aware of this that there is rioting going on in the streets of Belgrade Serbia right now as I type this. The US Embassy has come under attack (as well as many other Western Embassies) ... LOL the Canadian Embassy has been attacked and Canada has yet to even recognize Kosovo unlike some of the other western powers who have. Mob mentality in the works ... And I'm not so sure religion is the primary factor here, just one of two. But then again I am a closet Alberta separatist. Alberta and Montana should form their own new country just to piss off all those easterners in both countries. Then again Alberta doesn't need Montana. PS: the reason why Canada has not recognized Kosovo yet is because they don't want to give those Quebecers any ideas. NelKel 0 #13 February 21, 2008 I understand what is happening in Israel, as for as ancestral homeland, and separate state. If one were to compare the two would Serb's be like the Palestinians? I guess I don't understand why this is happening. Is there more that one country involved in this independence, and independence from who?

CanuckInUSA 0 #17 February 22, 2008 There have been two close Quebec independence referendums. The first one back in 1980 was close, but the 2nd one in 1995 (the one you speak of) was even closer. But I think Canada should hold a referendum to see if Quebec should be allowed to stay or if we can kick it out. Obviously Ontario and the Maritimes would vote to keep Quebec, but you would see less support the further west you travel. As I said, I am a closet Alberta separatist. I would love to divorce Ontario and Quebec. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

CanuckInUSA 0 #22 February 22, 2008 Maybe you can help educate some of us in the west to the complexities if the region. I am no Serbian/Kosovo expert. Any knowledge I have of the Balkans is only from the last 10-15 years and of course I have never physically been there. My feeling is that the USA, the UK, Germany and all the other western powers that immediately recognized Kosovo's independence claim, jumped the gun a little to fast and while the rioters shed a negative light on Serbia, their frustrations with the west are real. Correct me if I am wrong ... but ... Kosovo is currently populated by a majority of Albanians, not Serbs. But many of these Albanians are mainly recent immigrants to Kosovo. It is not like Kosovo has been dominated by Albanians for centuries. These Albanians are fairly new to Kosovo. Then throw in the Serbs are mainly Christian and Albanians are mainly muslim with both sides commiting crimes against each others religions institutions. At least in my mind I can understand why the Serbs would be upset and I wonder how much the US leadership (we know GWB can not think for himself, he has proved that time after time) as well as the other western leaders thought this situation out thoroughly before they decided to recognize Kosovo. The area I live in Calgary Canada as well as most of Vancouver is dominated by Chinese immigrants. It is as if these Chinese immigrants moving into my country just declare themselves an indepedent country. I wonder if the USA would recognize an independent Hongcouver or how about an independent Jerusalem? I wonder if the USA would recognize an independent Mexi'fornia? Once again please correct me if I am wrong about Kosovo. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
BillyVance 35 #23 February 22, 2008 Part of the problem with Kosovo and Serbia's indignation over the announced independence is that Kosovo is Serbia's ancient home land, or part of it. I think you're right about all the ethnic Albanians overtaking the area. Didn't Albania have a lot of people flee some time ago? BillyVance 35 #25 February 22, 2008 Quote Quote Wasn't Albania a hard-line repressive communist country not all that long ago? I think they still are. I just googled Albania. Interesting... "Between 1990 and 1992 Albania ended 46 years of xenophobic Communist rule and established a multiparty democracy. The transition has proven challenging as successive governments have tried to deal with high unemployment, widespread corruption, a dilapidated physical infrastructure, powerful organized crime networks, and combative political opponents. Albania has made progress in its democratic development since first holding multiparty elections in 1991, but deficiencies remain. International observers judged elections to be largely free and fair since the restoration of political stability following the collapse of pyramid schemes in 1997. In the 2005 general elections, the Democratic Party and its allies won a decisive victory on pledges of reducing crime and corruption, promoting economic growth, and decreasing the size of government. The election, and particularly the orderly transition of power, was considered an important step forward. Although Albania's economy continues to grow, the country is still one of the poorest in Europe, hampered by a large informal economy and an inadequate energy and transportation infrastructure. Albania has played a largely helpful role in managing inter-ethnic tensions in southeastern Europe, and is continuing to work toward joining NATO and the EU. Albania, with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been a strong supporter of the global war on terrorism."
