For health reasons there are strict rules about adopting pets in combat zones, but despite the rules quite a few units out there adopt local dogs and give them decent care. A few soldiers have even managed to get their pets home. I had a handful of puppies I took care of in Baghdad a few years back, they were too scared to go near any person after being abused by the Iraqis for so long it took me weeks just to get them to approach me. They don't like dogs in the part of the world, its a shame

I understand what you're saying, but I was sort of hoping to avoid this tangent as it can be argued we're not always so kind to dogs in the U.S. either.
Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
