rhys 0 #26 January 25, 2008 Quote In 2004 you insisted that the US was responsible for staying in Iraq until it became stable. We made a mess, have to clean it up. I advocated leaving. So where do you stand now? And at that time I was calling GWB a murderer, a traitor and warning you all that he is going to destroy your strong economy. I was called an idiot. How's your recession going? At least I don't have to pay so much for american skydiving gear anymore! kelpdiver 2 #27 January 25, 2008 For me personally, 2007 was my best year ever financially, beating out the dot com boom year of 2000. And my group still has open reqs paying very good money. That makes it better than it was in 2002 or 2004. I don't see the current recession so much as Bush's, or especially horrible. Despite all efforts, the economy has still proven too difficult to manage without cycles. The damage Bush did was in the huge amount of additional spending at the same time he moved to cut taxation. After the tax hikes of the 90s resulted in nearly balanced budgets, cuts weren't out of line, but you can't have multiple wars and a new homeland security at the same time. Oh, so why did we have "Freedom Fries" served in the White House? Are Russia, Germany and France now excluded from "world opinion"?... billvon 3,120 #29 January 25, 2008 >And as I've been saying, the pretenses were only false to the naive. The pretenses have been PROVEN false in actual fact. Google what our own weapons inspector found. Google the 9/11 report to see if Hussein helped Al Qaeda launch their attack on the US. (These are our own government's reports, so "it's the liberal media!" won't fly.) The only defense remaining is that "we were so stupid that we can't be held responsible for our decisions." Time to cowboy up and accept responsibility for the bad decision we made. >In 2004 you insisted that the US was responsible for staying in Iraq until it >became stable. Yep, I thought we had a responsibility to fix what we broke. Even that has failed - and it's become clear that leaving is the best thing we can do for the people of Iraq. It's what the people want, and it's what their legislature wants. >Waiting two months wouldn't result in a definitive answer. Were you on the inspection team? Barring that, I will go with the experts over your guess. Again, in the chickenhawk world, Saddam had vast arsenals of WMD's ready to destroy us. In the reality-based world, he provably did not. I prefer reality. >Wait two months - that would increase US fatalities. It would have reduced them to zero.
Zenister 0 #30 February 2, 2008 QuoteQuoteI read it as evidence of the need for (1) more technically competant individuals in the intelligence community (IC); (2) more stringent and better utilization of outside subject matter expertise by the IC, e.g., the JASONs; & (3) institutional-cultural change to enable dissident voice. (4) When considering something as significant as war, leaders should consider information and let it lead them to conclusions, rather than using their desired conclusions to filter the information. Putting the cart before the horse isn't a particularly efficient means of progress, and the person who does it looks foolish to all observers. if the process is not circumvented it does work this way.. asking questions to collect information to MAKE the decision vs MAKING the decision and asking questions in a manner that means the answers will (by design) support the already made decision... 'shut up and color' is/was the order of the day.. those who could not abide by such guidance looked for employment elsewhere____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
