I wanna build an AK-47...

I want to get some engraving done) and an exotic hardwood stock kit...

Um, those are items for finely-made expensive firearms. On an AK-47 they would be severely out of place. Kind of like wearing camouflage pants and a tie-die T-shirt. Oh wait, um, never mind...

Seriously, that would be a waste of good skill and fine wood on an AK.

Kinda depends on the engraving, doesn't it? If it were a milled receiver and the engraving, instead of some typical huntable critter were something like Bin Laden and an hour glass with the sand just about to run out....

...and want a really cool design but it's gotta be either ultra-modern or ultra-traditional.

There are a lot of nice kits out there but I haven't seen anything yet that really turns me on.

Anyone have any good ideas?

Galil.

Diopter rear sight for daylight use, flip-up buckhorn with tritium inserts for night use. AR15 magazine adapter for the .223 Galil. Folding stock. Built-in bipod which also functions as a wire cutter and bottle opener.

Start with a Russian made they are better that any other. There are a world of after market parts. I would like to build one but I still building my AR. I also was led to believe that an AK had to have atleast 4 American made parts. Etc.. Stock, sights, mag..... Do you know if there any truth to that?

18 USC 922(r) makes it illegal to assemble a rifle in a configuration which may not be imported (under current law, which includes the 1989 import ban, when you use more than 10 parts from the enumerated list.

The AK47 includes sixteen of the enumerated parts, so you must replace 6 to be legal.

Magazine bodies, followers, and floor plates are included in the parts list although using them for your count would make installing the wrong magazine a felony. That's silly.

The other legal alternative would be to comply with current law on importable configurations. IIRC that means unable to accept a high-capacity magazine. That's silly.

Unless you've moved to the People's Repulik of Kalifornia in which case things like the FAB10 (fed by a stripper clip when the receiver is open) are the best available.

Are you going to build an AK-47 or a semiautomatic 7.62x39mm Kalashnikov?

Granted, both are typically referred to as AK-47s, but I just thought we should clarify whether or not you're talking about committing a felony.

By the way, some of those posted pictures are of tricked-out Saiga 7.62x39mms and Saiga .308s. They're both based on the Kalashnikov receiver design, but they're not true Kalashnikovs. Even the 7.62x39mm version doesn't accept standard AK mags unless you modify either the receiver or the mags.
I don't have an M.D. or a law degree. I have bachelor's in kicking ass and taking names.

You are correct, one of the best AK style rifles made was the Hungarian MAC 90, it has the ability to use AK mags, and the thumbhole stock was actually nice, it was ergonomically correct for most americans as the stock was thick at the grip, which works best with larger hands.

Stay away from rifles where the people were of smaller stature, unles you have girly hands.

I sold mine, but not because it wasn't an excellent rendition of a Kalashnikov, but rather that I did not shoot it often.

I put the money towards a Benelli M1 Tactical, with surefire, and a rifled slug bbl.B|

In actuality I would not mind purchasing it back as I sold it for only $450.00 including a scope mount and 18 magazines.

But it is in good hands as it stayed with "The family";)

Let's face it, it isn't like I don't have a "few rifles":D

Semiauto.

If I wanted to commit a felony, there are several that are much higher on my list than that.

Oh, and a Saiga-12 is on my shopping list!

Build a Saiga 12ga. instead, they share many of the same features as an AK, and are actually quite nice, if you aren't staring at the wrong end!:o

A friend had a Saiga 12 and although I didn't get to shoot it, I broke it down and check it out pretty good. It became an instant "I want!!!!".

You can customize the hell out of that saiga, go for the 18"bbl, and have the muzzle threaded for a FS/Brake.

A picatinny railed dust cover is nice for adding a holosightB|

Look at Tromix.com for ideas, in fact Tony Rumore is quite helpful and forthcoming with tips.

He is so busy modifying them he doen't have the time to take too many more orders.

Also remember, that being a Texan, you can have a SBS, with select fire capabilty, or any other NFA firearms if you file the paperwork, and pay for the tax stamp.

Beware, NFA FA stuff eats alot.;)

Oh, I like it!

I was also thinking you could make kind of an anti-gun joke out of it. For example, it's common to hear the gun-o-phobes say something like; "You don't need an AK-47 to go duck hunting." Okay, so engrave the receiver with a duck-hunting scene: a hunter holding an AK-47 pointing at the sky, crouched down in the cattails, with ducks flying overhead.

I have an Ithaca 37 12 guage with a synthetic forestock and pistol grip and an 18 inch barrel. It has a duck hunting scene engraved on it. Kinda funny because it *should* have either a liquor store robbery or home defense scene on it! LOL
