lawrocket 3 #1 January 22, 2008 Political Correctness. TO me, it means what it is said. There are some things you just cannot say. And Obama has just now learned that. Obama said, "Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way Richard Nixon did not and a way that Bill Clinton did not...He put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it." God help his ass. How dare he suggest that Reagan changed some ideologies? Anything remotely positive stated abotu Reagan is an absolute anathema to the Democratic party faithful. It appears that Obama is positioning himself away from the hardcore democratic faithful. Obama seems to be getting his votes from the independents and moderates in the Dem party. The hardcore Dems have been throwing their support solidly behind Clinton. I am having a hard time finding anything Obama said that is positive about the substance of what Reagan did. Instead, Edwards and Clinton (both of them) blasted Obama for the mere suggestion that Reagan did something right. Obama stated that Reagan brought clarity to the nation and optimism. He went on to say "I think it's fair to say that the Republicans were the party of ideas for a pretty long chunk of time there over the last 10 to 15 years in the sense that they were challenging conventional wisdom." Hillary said, "That's not the way I remember the last ten to fifteen years." (Hillary - where were you in 1994? It's only for the last 7 or 8 years that the GOP has done things the same as usual). Edwards blasted him. "I would never use Ronald Reagan as an example of change." Thus, we see that politics is politics. There is no "party of hate." The Dems are just as good at it as the GOP. Plenty focus on "Clinton got a BJ." Most others on the right will point to Clinton as a substantively lacking president who was very well suited to be the national figurehead. But, you know, what Obama said was right, regardless of whether it was politically incorrect. Reagan DID bring optimism. Reagan DID bring a bunch of people together. Reagan DID manage to bring sides together on things. Gephardt and Bradley sponsored the 1986 Tax Reform Act. See, Reagan (a lame duck) and Congress (ideologically opposed) got together for a sweeping tax reform when there was actually no crisis. IN the last 50 years, we have not seen true bipartisanship as seen in the 1986 Tax Reform Act. Reagan took to the air to announce his plan. Who here remembers House Ways and Means Chairman Dan Rostenkowski and his "Write Rosty" address immediately following? Rosty praised Reagan and Reagan praised Congress throughout. It was almost lost in the Senate until Reaganite Richard Darman and a group of a few senators (including Bradley) worked out the kinks. Obama points out stuff like this - what should be a triumph for the GOP and Democrats. And Obama pointed out that Reagan had a large responsibility for making things like this happen. Clinton tried, but went too far. Clinton could not pass health care reform. Clinton could not fix Medicare. Clinton could not fix Social Security. Clinton could not secure peace in the Middle East. Obama is facing the consequences of haters on the left for saying it. How dare he commit a cardinal sin of saying something that wasn't hateful about Reagan? My wife is hotter than your wife. dannydan 5 #2 January 23, 2008 Doesn't make any sense does it? On one hand you hear what some want to DO for the whole lot, and on the other hand you hear and then SEE what some will DO for themselves..... such a pity! While I have not been an active Obama follower, He did say the right thing! I probably wont vote for Him (Obama) In fact I will probably "spoil" my ballot on purpose for various reasons that are to lengthy to explain here. Unstable 9 #3 January 23, 2008 Man. I consider myself a good republican, but I've learned a long time ago, that if you go too far to either extreme, Republican or Democrate, you'll find a good collection of nutjobs. QuoteGod help his ass. How dare he suggest that Reagan changed some ideologies? Anything remotely positive stated abotu Reagan is an absolute anathema to the Democratic party faithful. I've seen this kind of behavior from the left and the right. The Democrats/Republicans can't do anything right at all. If something went well in their term, it was our party that made it happen. Whatever. I think Obama is reaching for moderate republicans (like myself) and this is something Huckabee and Count Clinton just can't do. Good for him. Quote Hillary said, "That's not the way I remember the last ten to fifteen years." (Hillary - where were you in 1994? It's only for the last 7 or 8 years that the GOP has done things the same as usual). Edwards blasted him. "I would never use Ronald Reagan as an example of change." Ah yes. Good logic. His ideas were so mundane and main stream that they even had to name a whole new approach to economic reform after him and force it upon every college student in the country for the last 20 years.
