Three good things about a Dem Pres in 08

Recommended Posts

>i just don't think that the prez has as much influence, good or bad, over
>something as complex as the economy.

Quite true.

Oddly, though, when the economy is doing well, the incumbent's supporters tend to say things like "it's his tax cuts that have caused the economy to do well!" It's when it starts to do poorly that they decide there's not much of a link.

Welcome to politics.

Of course, there are cries for a "stimulus package" and that the government "must do something."

And the President takes credit for trying to do something. And the opposing party says it's stupid - he got us into this problem. And he says, "No I didn't. You guys mismanaged it. I tried to push through an initiative package." And they say, "LIAR..."

The only people who bust their asses on roller coasters are the ones who jump off in the middle of it.

I like that. Very good.

Figure the upper average length of the typical economic cycle. Make it 5 to 7 years.

Decide the age at which you will retire; in other words, when will you stop making more than you spend? (If you are not retired and spend more than you make, you have a more funfdamental problemn to address).

Subtract length of economic cycle from your anticipated retirement date.

Up until that date, ride it out. From that date on, begin transition out of market-based investments.

Pretty simple really; but I like the roller-coaster line better.

Oh definitely not selling- I bought some on the downswing in mid Jan trying to anticipate bottom, but it kept on going as you can see. Many investors are in the house of pain, virtually all of the profits made last year are gone. I had sold in Dec so I got LUCKY but I miscalculated the decline and it looks like there's more pain on the way, so right now I am Holding....

It will come back, time to buy again in a few months -especially certain beleagered financials, tech, and consumer staples.

Oh, I know. I took on some extra real estate in which I may have lost some money already. However, I planned it so that I can last at least five years with it. Even though I may have been able to get some of it at a lower price next year, it's not going to affect my margins and I managed to get a great house in a great neighborhood at a great price with a great renter.

Just as the republicans gave Clinton zero credit for the economy he presided over

bill gates had more to do with the economy of the 90's than bill clinton. i just don't think that the prez has as much influence, good or bad, over something as complex as the economy.

There may be individuals more important than the President, but Gates isn't one of them. Windows has been successful, but in its absence other products would have substituted fine, and in my viewpoint, been more beneficial to the business world.

Yeah, it's almost impossible to pick out the bottom in any kind of market, especially real estate. Today the stock market rallied 300pts- could be a suckers rally due to the fed cut, and the mortgage insurance bailout announcement.
It's encouraging that the president, congress, and the Fed are showing some leadership but lets face it -Bush is near the lame duck phase of this game so It's not time to push the buy button just yet until there are some more definite indications of a turnaround.

1) Banks and the Fed will be abolished, instead piles of money will be dropped off on each street corner daily & only corporations will be taxed.

2) All schools will have a condom and marijuana cigarette dispenser in each classroom.

3)All guns will be banned and police will be equipped with fly swatters & terrorists will be raised here free range and organic... and will be provided with the banned guns.

How ironic, then, that the president proposing "dropping money off on streetcorners" to stimulate the economy is a republican.

2 & 3 are definitely Dem positions, though!! :P

Perhaps if we replace 1 with "force everyone to be gay" it would be more accurate, then. And since the #1 item on a republican president's agenda will be to "kill all the gays" they would neatly cancel each other out.

Uh do you know how many guns I own.. and how many of them are actually blooded.

Smoking dope makes me nauseous.... so its been only 40 years or so since I tried....inhaling.

But the condom thing I think is a great idea... less teenage pregnancy.. and the lowered need for abortions.. plus a lower incidence of STD transmissal amoung the young would be a welcome change from the current level of stupidity that expects abstinence to work to prevent all of that:S:S:S

Doesn't matter... "Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them in" - that's the motto of those you so vehemently support.

DUDE.. back to Parataxic Distortion...as the Brits would say.. What a load of bollocks.

I know of plenty of Dem candidates that respect our second amendment rights... Far more in fact than rePUBICans who have no respect for our first or fourth amendment rights as evidenced by their ACTIONS in the last 6 years.

Seriously.. all that paranoia that everyone is out to get your guns.....is not based on reality.... several of you here.. have far more to fear from what has been done in the name of HOMELAND SECURITY..... than the random legislator from a district that has severe problems with illegal weaopns...ie gangs and such.. and is reacting to the desires of MOST of his constituents.

If the government declares martial law based on provisions of your Patriot Act.. do you really feel your guns are safe from them???

Really? Look up the Sullivan laws, or the Cali ban and get back to me on that.

"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. A military force, at the command of Congress, can execute no laws, but such as the people perceive to be just and constitutional; for they will possess the power, and jealousy will instantly inspire the inclination, to resist the execution of a law which appears to them unjust and oppressive." -- Noah Webster, An Examination of the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution [1787]

While, yes, there are some nationally prominent and a few local Democratic politicians who are outspoken in their desire to restrict gun ownership and carrying rights; the national party, the state party, and the rank and file Democrats in most districts have no impulse to curb 2nd Amendment rights.

This was amply demonstrated at the DPO state central committee meeting on Sept 9 where the party voted to found The Gun Owners Caucus of the Democratic Party of Oregon. This follows on the DPO SCC's passage last year of Resolution 2005-008, discussed here on Blue Oregon, which also clearly supports 2nd Amendment rights.

Jason Brown's support for the 2nd Amendment is echoed by every Democratic candidate I've spoken to about it this fall--Carol Voisin, Lee Coleman, Paul Evans, and on down the line.

It ought to be echoed by any Democrat who wants to do two things: support the Constitution and win elections. But relax. Read Resolution 2005-008; the DPO already is pro-2nd Amendment. And that's what the Gun Owners Caucus was founded to let people know.
