JohnRich 4 #1 January 11, 2008 News:Deactivated guns to be banned The government said Thursday that it plans to ban deactivated firearms by the end of the year after a huge increase in the number of model and pellet guns that have been converted to fire live ammunition. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said the ban would protect the public and give police the power to remove the 'black market' firearms. The police believe there are an estimated 120,000 deactivated weapons in circulation across Britain. The shadow home secretary, David Davis said deactivated weapons accounted for a tiny proportion of gun crime; "the government's own figures show that, in 2005-06, there were only eight incidents where deactivated or reactivated weapons were used - just 0.04% of gun offences." Davis said "sustained action" was needed to tackle the other 99.6% of gun crime, which he said had increased fourfold over the past decade. A Home Office spokeswoman confirmed that new restrictions would affect all firearms adapted before more stringent standards for deactivating guns were introduced in 1995, including antiques. The move could therefore affect collectors and exhibitors of historic weapons such as flintlock pistols. "This could make life more awkward for legitimate people and collectors," he added. "A ban on antique firearms would be very worrying."Sources: AFP Guardian They'll be a-coming for your squirt guns next...

ExAFO 0 #3 January 12, 2008 Scotch Eggs (4 servings) 1 pound bulk pork sausage 1 tablespoon fresh parsley -- chopped 1 tablespoon grated onion 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 4 hard-cooked eggs -- shelled 1/2 cup fine dry breadcrumbs Combine sausage, parsley, onion, cinnamon and nutmeg; mix well. Divide sausage mixture into 4 portions; shape into patties. Place one egg atop each patty, shaping the sausage mixture around egg till completely covered. Roll each sausage-covered egg in breadcrumbs. Bake in a preheated 350 degree F. oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. So fattening but so good! Scotch Eggs are a favorite hunting, fishing and tailgating breakfast in the Southern USA. They are portable and delicious. In Scotland where the dish originated, Scotch Eggs are especially popular at picnics where they are eaten cold. Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.
1969912 0 #4 January 12, 2008 Are deactivated firearms a danger to society despite the fact that they were deactivated pursuant to UK law and marked with an official stamp certifying them as such? Here's an example of how a SIG P226 is/was "deactivated" under UK law (Firearms Act 1982): http://www.cybershooters.org/dgca/FAQ.htm#What%20has%20to%20be%20done%20to%20a%20firearm%20to%20deactivate%20it? Reactivation looks like it wouldn't be a trivial task. 25 years later it has magically become very easy to reactivate them, after all, in 2005/2006 there were "eight incidents where deactivated or reactivated weapons" were used in gun offenses in the UK. (Note that "gun offenses" under UK law do not require that a gun be able to fire, or even be a real gun. Also note that no distinction is made between deactivated and reactivated, so it's possible that NO reactivated guns were involved in the 8 offenses. Oh well, let's ban/confiscate them anyway). Everyone's safe now, right? Maybe not. Here's a really good idea provided by Bruce Barak Koffler. Mr. Koffler was a graduate student studying criminology at Canada's Ottowa University in 1969. In an article published in the March, 1970 issue of The Journal of Criminal Law, Criminology, and Police Science, he shows how to convert a toy cap gun into a real .22 cal pistol using a piece of car radio antenna. See: http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0022-0205%28197003%2961%3A1%3C115%3AZGACCI%3E2.0.CO%3B2-5&size=LARGE&origin=JSTOR-enlargePage. Children's toy capguns are clearly a danger to civilized society. If they haven't been banned already, capguns should be next to go. Everyone should be safe now. But what about "zipguns"? A zipgun can be as simple as a piece of metal tubing with an ID slightly larger tan a .22 cal slug. Insert a round of ammo, strike the cartridge base with a rock, and you have just fired a gun. Should certain sizes of metal tubing be banned next? Perhaps ALL metal tubing should be banned. What about rocks? Skyrad 0 #7 January 12, 2008 Hey John, I saw that aritcle and thought to myself "AhHA! I know what JR's next post is going to be!" I almost posted it myself. Its a stupid soundbite knee jerk reaction by a government that is either to out of touch or to scared to tackle the real causes of gun crime. A) The destruction over the last two decades of an effective border control organisation ie: HM Customs. B) The Yob culture of the UK and the acceptance of violence within this society. C) An impotent and scared police 'Service'. D) Turning Police into paper pushers. E) An influx of hardcore eastern european criminals. One question, why do you bother to make your gun control posts Polls? you know people will just post pro control because its your post. I don't think for a second that 67% of respondants think its a good idea, do you? When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. But you guys don't even seem to have a gun problem anyway. I'd be all over that yob culture with whatever resources necessary in order to reverse whatever's causing it. The US has been doing the same thing with our equivalent of the yob culture - focusing on something else. The immigrants should settle down over time (that's been the historical case here anyway). JohnRich 4 #15 January 14, 2008 QuoteIts a stupid soundbite knee jerk reaction by a government that is either to out of touch or to scared to tackle the real causes of gun crime. Ding ding ding! Correct. It's the typical response of governments and politicians to pretend to be doing something, when in fact they are doing nothing at all to solve the problem, and are only infringing upon the rights of the law-abiding. Same old story. And just look at the poll to see how many uninformed people support this invalid process... QuoteOne question, why do you bother to make your gun control posts Polls? you know people will just post pro control because its your post. I don't think for a second that 67% of respondants think its a good idea, do you? They might. But the people who bother to respond might be a biased sample. So these don't really mean anything scientifically. It's just a way to see how people feel here, and to give them a chance to express themselves.
