Most school systems have all the appearance of large baby sitting operations in many large cities. My tax dollars are being wasted... And when we have a fucknugget who seems to think the answer to the problem is No Child Left Behind... where teachers teach to a test instead of giving our young a real education... then yes we have a problem. Parents in most cases are also part of the problem.. since most of them seem to be as stupid as their children. They will not work with their children on homework.. I think because they are afraid of looking stupid.. OR they cant be bothered to help them because ESPN is on....and the Winston Cup rerun is onThe whole dumb as dirt and proud of it.. and denigrating those who DO try to learn and prosper is a huge part of the problem. Look at how many here put down "elitists".... when in actuality its good ole boys who feel jealous of those with a better education and who seek to better lives for their family and themselves. Until education is valued far more than it currently is..by paying for better teachers.... and getting the parents involved... it will not change and the system will continue its slide into mediocrity. It was (at least) slightly different when you and I were growing up...but I've really seen it take off over the last 20 years. The overall AIM of the act was good - who DOESN'T want teachers to be more highly-skilled, or to have our children get a better quality of education? Where I see it breaking down is in the implementation. My understanding, and please correct me if I'm wrong, is that the better a state does on the testing (which, please note, the STATE selects), the more federal funds the state gets. That is EXACTLY backwards, IMO, if that *IS* the case, and results in "teaching the test", which is a disservice to the students. Note: before you get TOO wound around the axle over NCLB, you *may* want to look at the Improving America's Schools Act of 1994 and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 - this ain't nothing new.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim.
