Rearing cattle produces more greenhouse gases than driving cars

Recommended Posts

What about all the human greenhouse emissions? When's the last time you were in a Sky Van?:D Then you have all the other creatures in the world that emit greenhouse gasses. Do they want to eliminate them too? It all strikes me as weird. You have all these animal rights groups yet, they keep pickin' on cattle! It's a conspiracy by the veggans!!!!
Besides, I think, 'global warming' is a crock. I think, we are just going through a 'climate cycle'. I think too, that Al Gore is full of poop!

Nope! The planet has been dealing with them for the past few million years, and can continue doing so for the next few million. It could even deal with our CO2 emissions if we weren't putting so much of the stuff into the atmosphere.

But we've exceeded that limit, and now CO2 levels are climbing fast. That's the problem.

Consider the case of a well. It's not bad to take water out of it. But if you take so much out that your well (and your neighbor's) runs dry, then that is a problem. It's the quantity, not the fact that you are doing it at all.

We have experienced a situation like you mentioned. The Dallas-Ft. Worth area is running out of water. Our mental giant politicians as well as a few entrepreneurs, came-up with the bright idea of taking water from far West Texas to 'help' those needing the water in Dallas-Ft. Worth. Don't those idiots realize, we have been in a drought out here for the last fifteen years? As far as I'm concerned, if, folks are so worried about water conservation and water usage, the folks with swimming pools and spas can lighten-up on their usage. Also the fact that their lawn watering and letting it run down the gutters, doesn't help either. Now, they want OUR water.>:( It boils down to the fact, we are a 'wasteful' nation. We have been that way since the Natives tied-up Columbus' boat! Now, we are paying the price and we're running around like blind mice trying to find a 'quick fix'.

Yep. The problem isn't that we have no water, it's that we have too many acre-sized lawns, swimming pools and fake waterfalls. Heck, out here people create _ski_lakes_ in the desert - and then wonder why there are feuds over farmers getting enough water.

There's a lot of room to expand out there - we just have to be smart about how we do it.

That's the results of 'too much of a good thing'. Folks have it too good in this country. Granted, not everyone but, enough to really make a difference and not in a good way. We have the same thing here. Ranchers are concerned they won't get enough rain to keep stock tanks full and would have to go to pumping water, which costs them money. Same with the farmers and then, for someone to suggest taking from a depleated supply? We just take everything for granted in this country and we are so ego-centric as a nation, we want the rest of the world to be just like us. I heard warnings from the older folks, when I was growing-up, of what we have right now. Sadly, noone listened.

>they should stop subsidizing meat production through free transportation, land giveaways etc. Once meat reflects the cost required to produce it, then it naturally declines as a main food source.

I like that - you free-marketters just don't understand the nuances of forcing whatever industry is in vogue...:P

"they should stop subsidizing {{{insert product category}}} production through (government involvement). Once {{{insert product category}}} reflects the cost required to produce it, then it naturally declines as a (product)"

Like everything else. What about those of us who like beef? Just because a small portion of our society doesnt
like something, they picket, scream at govt. officials till they are blue in the face and put-out millions of dollars for their
'pet project' just so the majority can do without whatever it is. When that's out of 'fashion', they move-on to something else. They tell us we should not eat meat... too much cholesterol! Don't eat the fat! The meat producers have worked hard to come-up with leaner cattle that provide leaner cuts. Also what about 'moderation'? Anything will kill you if, you eat too damned much of it! Tired of government involvement in our lives? What about these 'groups' telling us how we should eat, drink or whatever to have a 'better life'! My life is just great! I eat right, get 8-hrs. sleep a night, good physical check-ups, etc. and I eat my veggies... with my beef! I say; "DOWN WITH VEGGANS... EAT MORE BEEF!" >:(

"Rearing Cattle" sounds like a dubious act..... to me:P

I thought, human children were 'reared' and cattle were 'raised'!? :D

My uncle had a good size ranch. My cousin went to school and got a Finance degree and his masters later.
My cousin worked as the president of a local bank for a few banks and then left to run the ranch.

We were sitting out in front of a local store and a guy approaches us. With a really arrogant tone, he says, "I understand that you breed cattle."

In his most deadpan voice, my cousin replies,
"No sir, they do that themselves."

The other guy thought he was serious and was trying to clarify himself.

I had a vegetarian in an english class in auburn a couple of years ago, he started talking about how beef was destroying the world. It was actually pretty funny to sit there and ramble on. Livestock in general produce more green house gases not just beef. The entire class laughed at him until he got up and stormed out, i laughed my ass off and as usual you had to be there.
