And this is where the First Amendment breaks down.

I understand being pissed and disgusted about this but, to say this is where the 1st Amendment breaks down? I am having a hard time understanding that perspective.

Because, in this case, there OUGHT to be a law.

Or . . . are you unaware of what the First Amendment has to say about that?

Kind of snarky today huh?:S

There are laws about fraud. How do you want to make a law to protect someone from thier own bad judgement?.

Again, I agree this "church" is scum but what would you do?

I would have a problem with banning of any speech. There ARE laws against speech, but the laws are intended to compensate the damage that the speech causes.

Several years ago, Dubya nominated Janice Rogers Brown for a position on the federal bench. Brown was a justice on the California Supreme Court. She had been openly villified for her dissent of a decision by the Cal Supreme's that affirmed a trial court judge's order banning the use of certain racially derogatory words in a workplace.

See, Brown (joined by noted civil libertarian Stanley Mosk) thought that people should be punished for saying the words, not that the words should never be allowed to be said.

Probably the most eloquent statement is this one: "A theory deeply etched in our law is that a free society prefers to punish the few who abuse rights of speech after they break the law than to throttle them and all others beforehand. It is always difficult to know in advance what an individual will say, and the line between legitimate and illegitimate speech is often so finely drawn that the risks of freewheeling censorship are formidable."

Unfortunately we live in a world where the gambling mindset and those that prey upon it is growing larger and larger. In my mind the people who give to these 'prosperity preachers' and expect a large reward for doing so are no different than those who go to a casino, sit their butt down, and whittle away their days/nights expecting to walk out with a wad of cash.

Both proprietors are preying on this mind set. Just with a different twist.

Sounds kind of like the people who think that if we give just a little more to the govt., somehow, we'll all be blessed beyound measure.

What an absurd comment.

How do you expect to pay for a $trillion+ war without paying for it? What blessings is this war bestowing?

The US is in debt BECAUSE the taxpayers don't pay enough.

Has nothing whatever to do with religious fraud.

Let me add to the absurdity. With all of the debt, which collection agency is calling us up and sweating us during the evening meal?

Are you truly wringing your hands over this debt? Are you ready to take the big screen tv to the pawn shop?

Are you arguing that the tax exempt status of churches in buried somewhere within the text? Or is this really just an anti religion rant?

Preachers are entertainers. If they ask for money and people give it, what crime has been committed?

Or, the US is in debt because it spends too much money.

I've seen lots of people in serious debt trouble. Rarely is the true reason that they do not make enough money. In fact, the USUAL reason is that they spend too much. The whole "Champagne life on a Budweiser budget."

Think of the trillion we could have saved without this war. It'd be awesome. But notice that most people say that the money on the war "could have been better spent on ."

A better way is, "Don't spend it."

When a person puts $35k on a credit cards and gets into serious trouble, it usually is not said, "You know, Joe, that money could have been better spent on a car." Usually, Joe should have never spent the money to begin with and Joe would have been better off by, dare I say, um, NOT SPENDING IT!

We could go socialist and pay 70% of our income to the government....

So you think they need to raise taxes? Do you send your spare income to the IRS each month? You seem to think your not paying enough. How about cut spending?
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

Of course Quade can speak for himself, but I'm thinking he's not referring to free speech, but rather to the part of the 1st Amend that reads: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion....".

I think he's got a certain point: the (seemingly) religious charlatans are using this as a shield to..well, shield themselves from the sort of scrutiny - in the nature of mandatory accounting, independent audits, disclosures, etc. - to which they might otherwise be subject if not deemed religious organizations.

That being said, Rushmc makes a valid point that there are laws against fraud. But the constitutional "shield" often makes the discovery and proof of that fraud quite difficult.

Unfortunately, not even I have enough cash on hand to compensate for the failure of neo-cons like you to pay for their favorite war.

And instead of borrowing more money or raising taxes to meet deficits (and to meet "projected deficits") why don't we stop the deficits?

For me personally, I'd like to buy a few hundred acres in the mountains. But I don't have the money to do it. I guess I should just not buy that property until I can afford to do so.

so why was the believer bitter?

did she just send in the money, pray, & then sit on her ass expecting a box of money from God to arrive at her door?

:S

Apparently you don't understand how TRUE religion works. God=Tax-exempt bond fund. You send in money at a guaranteed return APY of 0%, the more you send in the higher your return goes, once you break a certain mark it actually increases from 0% to a competitive rate of 0%. Your return rate is also influenced by how many weekends you go to church pretending you live a good life and sit around with your fellow ulra-honest-living cohorts talking about how all the non-believers that don't attend churh are going to hell because they didn't invest the money they pulled out of the lint filter in the new God fund like everyone else at church did.

I know it can seem hard to grasp at first but just give it some time, it'll sink in. And if yu're really confused send me $500 and I'll send you our informational God fund packet, as soon as I cash your check I will ensure my gideons personally place a god fund packet in the dresser drawer of the next hotel you intend to stay at. It's a good book, all your questions to investing and living can be answered by randomly opening a page and reading what I personally wrote with the help of my fund manager.....God:P
History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid.
