The nanotechnology experts at the Technion institute in Haifa say the text measures less than 0.5 square millimeter (0.01 square inch) surface. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,318072,00.html "Once we got to the point where twenty/something's needed a place on the corner that changed the oil in their cars we were doomed . . ." -NickDG

It's like a demonstration vehicle for the technology. IBM makes a computer like Deep Blue, which shows the computing capabilities. From the article: "Zohar said the technology will in the future be used as a way to store vast amounts of data on bio-molecules and DNA." It sounds like it IS medical research. Focused Ion Beam (FIB) etching/milling is used to fabricate nano-materials, which have many potential applications in medicine and other areas. Technion Haifa has a nanotechnology department and FIB equipment there is used for research. The Bible project was just a "hey, wouldn't it be cool to....." kind of thing. Etching the Bible may have been as simple as entering the text into the FIB control system. In any case, it wasn't the goal of any research program/project, and cost little or no money to do. A side benefit is publicity for Technion.
