"Hey, Sarge, I gotta woman who got mugged who's _really_ upset!" "Well, calm her down." You've got the wrong culture there, Bill. That would only happen in Saudi to a woman who had been raped.I feel all Americans should step up to the plate and be practice-Tasered. Then when/if it happens for real, it won't be such a shock. Gawain 0 #9 December 21, 2007 I put this on the store. I also put this on the officer. Their stance was clearly a "guilty until proven innocent" idea. On top of that, the credit card verification should have been complete at the point-of-sale before any confrontation was made. That officer was not physically threatened, according to the report, the only threat to her was verbal language, and that is not illegal. Also, was Ms. Beeland told she was under arrest? I'm betting no, and I guarantee her Miranda rights were not stated to her. This also creates an issue in my mind, about having law enforcement operating on private property, in a store. Resources are better allocated over a wider area in the public zones able to respond to multiple merchants, etc.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! warpedskydiver 0 #10 December 21, 2007 The officer will no doubt use the "I gave her a lawful order to shut up" defense. What do you think would have happened if that womans SO was a legal CCW holder? His wife was just illegally assaulted after being falsely accused of CC fraud. What if the womans husband was a cop?, or a fed?If that woman feared for her life from an irate, or hostile cop, she would have had a right to stop her attacker by any means.(depending on the state)

warpedskydiver 0 #12 December 21, 2007 This reminds me of an incident ten years ago where I was with my ex, and was walking out of walmart. We were going through the exit and two black guys ran past us carrying items with no bags. The store security moron chose to grab me by the shoulder, and try to spin me around.... Afterwards he wanted to press charges for assault.

Zipp0 1 #15 December 21, 2007 Quote zzzzZAP! Apparently we cannot even get upset in public any longer. I love watching the moron chief defend the indefensible. So, tell me cops in SC - are citizens not even allowed to get upset anymore????!!! She was accused of using a fake credit card, was upset about it, so she got tasered? Are tasers supposed to be used to 'calm people down'? Maybe I'll carry a taser instead of my gun so I can react with proper force when illegally assaulted by a cop. nerdgirl 0 #19 December 21, 2007 I find that inexcusable and disagree unilaterally with the Police Chief's assertion that the taser, a non-lethal weapon (or "less than lethal" - the moniker the DOJ prefers), was designed for such situations: According to the Director of the DOJ's National Institute of Justice (NIJ): "Less-than-lethal weapons were developed to provide law enforcement, corrections, and military personnel with an alternative to lethal force [emphasis nerdgirl]. They are designed to temporarily incapacitate, confuse, delay, or restrain an adversary in a variety of situations. They have been used primarily in on-the-street confrontations and suicide interventions, but have also been applied in riots, prison disturbances, and hostage rescues. Less-than-lethal weapons are most often used when: (1) lethal force is not appropriate, (2) lethal force is justified but lesser force may subdue the aggressor, and (3) lethal force is justified but its use could cause collateral effects, such as injury to bystanders or unacceptable damage to property and environment." In this case, the use of the taser fails under (1), (2), & (3). In the video, the civilian is clearly backing away (even if arms are "flailing"), and the LEO is clearly moving forward. The civilian was not the "aggressor." Regardless, NLWs are an "alternative to lethal" not an alternative to good, professional law enforcement. KelliJ 0 #22 December 21, 2007 I'd really like to know what the verbal exchange was between the two. As I said, I couldn't view the video but was able to view the slide show, but that didn't help much. Can someone (anyone) fill in the blanks? I can't see how using a taser on an unarmed woman in a one-on-one situation can be justified but I don't know what was said.
