champu 1 #26 December 17, 2007 There are very few posters on dropzone.com that could be considered subject matter experts on the handful of thread themes that go round and round here in speakers corner. And even then, the comprehensiveness of the knowledge base often leaves something to be desired. Some folks understand that, some folks masquerade in any thread they get politically charged up about. livendive 8 #27 December 17, 2007 Quote Quote Quote So far, we have about a 80-20 split on some very basic facts. Considering this appears to be a well-educated group, what does that say education in general? Hard to say really. Might be they're just saying the opposite of what most people would normally accept as facts just to be contrarians or maybe they just want to mess with the pollster. I've specifically not answered some of the questions out of suspicion about where this line of questioning is leading. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" It's pretty simple - it clearly leads to a handful of people patting themselves on the back with how clever they'd like to feel nothing more or less than that ... cloudseeker2001 0 #30 December 18, 2007 Quote Yes, those are the three types. Why do I believe this? Because my 7th grade New Jersey Education Association union member told me so. I wrote the same back to her on a piece of paper at the end of the marking period, and she put a green check mark next to it and a gold star sticker at the top. Damn, you learned this in the 7th grade? I had to take a college class to get this info! If they can't handle arithmetic, they will soon discover that they signed up for the wrong class and the ones that DO get the algebra will thank you for not wasting their time and money. My reality and yours are quite different. Actually, except for in pre-algebra, other than using an arithmetic process to show an algebraic process (ex fractions and rational expressions), that is my general approach. I also teach them how to use their calculators correctly to help bolster the weak arithmetic skills. I am mostly lamenting that we have so many college students that can't do arithmetic, let alone junior high or high school algebra before getting to college."safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!!
