misaltas 0 #4 December 15, 2007 Yes, those are the three types. Why do I believe this? Because my 7th grade New Jersey Education Association union member told me so. I wrote the same back to her on a piece of paper at the end of the marking period, and she put a green check mark next to it and a gold star sticker at the top.Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts

quade 4 #16 December 16, 2007 QuoteWhy do you ask? Ah . . . a question rather than speculation! I'm trying to reconcile some widely held beliefs in facts among various factions. Some very basic understanding of some very basic things ought to help me understand people and perhaps why they believe what they do. So far, we have about a 80-20 split on some very basic facts.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

I voted "no." Not because I'm un educated on geology, but rather because we haven't been to all parts of the Earth, much less other planets. I don't KNOW that 25-50yrs from now, we won't look back and find that we were wrong. Our knowledge today is limited (and I say this carefully knowing that someone else got banned recently for refering to limited intellect) But knowing and admitting what I don't know is one way that I try to better understand what I do know. Hard to say really. Might be they're just saying the opposite of what most people would normally accept as facts just to be contrarians or maybe they just want to mess with the pollster.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
grannyinthesky 0 #20 December 16, 2007 I would sure hope it is something like you are suggesting, but as a college math teacher, I spend a lot of time wondering why I am having to teach basic arithmetic in an algebra class for adults. And applications cause such grief that it is raally sad. Even when students manage to figure out the mechanics of what we are doing, they really struggle to use the math. Many students can't even recognize when they have a solution that is absolutely unreasonable for the context."safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! Tink1717 2 #21 December 16, 2007 Yeah, it always amazes me that facts, data, truth, logic and rationality are totally ineffective weapons when dealing with a belief. Amazon 7 #22 December 16, 2007 Think of it this way....My cousin homeschooled his 3 kids in his home in North Carolina. His wife is a fundie who did not want their children exposed to the secular world. I think they did a great job preparing the children for life in the 19th century.. not the 21st century where they will have to live. They are completely and utterly inept in any form of social interactions with other human beings outside of their church. I get the feeling if there was not a chapter on algebra in the Bible that it did not get taught. I am not sure how much of that is going on in our country. Talking to them about anything other than the bible... is like talking to a box of rocks.
grannyinthesky 0 #23 December 16, 2007 Although I have seem some excellent home schooling, I've seen more of the kind you're describing. I think it's doing a terrible disservice to the kids. They really are prepared for the world in so many ways, not just socially. What that kind of education does to their science knowledge could almost be considered child neglect IMHO"safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!!
